Do you know what #Paralympics stands for? I can tell you it 100% is NOT a shortened term for "paraplegic" Olympics. It derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or alongside), in other words a parallel #Olympics for people with disabilities. So why the break between the Olympics and the Paralympics?... Why not run it all at once? Fundamentally, it takes a significant amount of logistics to bump out Olympic athletes from 329 events in 32 sports from the village only for Paralympic athletes competing in a staggering 549 events in 22 sports to arrive and get setup! I have sat through hundreds of soccer games over the last 15 years as all four of my children have played both travel and school soccer. I am beyond amazed at the sport of Blind Soccer. The stadium is silenced, no cheering until a goal is scored - a goalie who may have their sight but field players who are blindfolded. Sounds crazy! and Impossible. After coming off of a soccer tournament this past weekend, and catching the news highlights this morning of the Blind Soccer Paralympics, I asked my daughter over breakfast, could you play soccer blind? "No way!" Immediate response received, I am beyond amazed, motivated, and inspired. In a world where we often find the smallest thing to blame for a failure or less than optimal outcome when things don't go our way - the athletes at the paralympics are getting things done. Change I can't to I can, because they are. Situational circumstances do not define your path. Your courage, focus, determination, drive, and grit do. When your head and heart are aligned there are no limitations on what you can accomplish. Lacking motivation today? Transport - Olympic & Paralympic Games. Planing transportation for any Olympic & Paralympic Games is tough. A ton of moving parts that all have to be in sync for the transport plan to succeed. As the City of Los Angeles gears up for the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic a Summer Games, it's imperative that the United States government lends its support to ensure seamless transport planning and operations. As the Olympic Games are being held this year in Paris, I thought it would be interesting to explore how the Olympians earn their chance at gold, silver, or bronze. It turns out that, just like in the world of finance, the path to the Olympics is paved with strategic planning, diligent effort, and a fair bit of competitive spirit. Paris 2024 Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be held from 26 July to 11 August of this year and will include Aquatics, Athletics, and Boxing. New categories like breaking (as in break-dancing, I kid you not) will grace the games, as over 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries compete in 306 medal events. The Right Stuff? When it comes to qualifying, each sport has a different metric by which they judge. Some are based on individual performances, others on the collective strength of national teams. Sports like shooting and taekwondo offer quotas for places earned by individual athletes, which helps prevent a small number of countries from dominating any event. However, even then, the final say on who fills those quota places lies with the athlete's respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Dream Teams In team sports, nations secure their spots through performances in World Championships, continental competitions, or global qualifiers. This rigorous selection process ensures only the highest-performing athletes represent their countries on the international stage, making each event a (hopefully) thrilling spectacle of skill and sportsmanship. Unless we have broadcasters, we wont have enough viewers, unless we have viewers, we wont have enough para sports followers, unless have enough para sports followers, we wont have enough para sport lover, unless we have para sports lover, we wont have the potential growth in the Paralympic Movement. it is likely that a country with a large population and a strong sporting culture will have the highest overall sports viewership, thus countries like India, China, US, with a high percentage of sports viewership, can play a major role in creating the awareness and building interest for Paralympic sports. Additionally, IPC must put measures so that specialized subjects like classification could be made understandable to everyone watching the sport.
