🌊 Day 3 Recap: Black in Marine Science Week 🌊 From inspiring keynotes to thought-provoking panels, Day 3 was nothing short of incredible! ✨ Morning Highlights We kicked things off with the incomparable Christian Cooper delivering a keynote that reminded us of the power of resilience and inclusivity in nature. His passion and insights set the tone for the day! ✨ Afternoon Sessions • Trauma to Triumph with Dr. Tiara Moore and Lynnette Adams : A moving discussion on overcoming challenges in marine science. • Surfing the Leaky Pipeline with Amani Webber-Schultz : Practical advice for navigating the path to graduate school in marine science. ✨ BIMS X Talks We were blown away by the brilliance of our speakers: Dr. Obakeng Molelu , Leslie Nguyen, Germain Bebe, Danielle McHaskell, and Renne Harcourt. Each talk was filled with passion, innovation, and inspiration. ✨ Blue Table Talk “How Can AI Empower You as a Marine Scientist” brought together Craig Poku and Germain Bebe, MBA for a fascinating discussion on tech and science. Ended the night with an incredible youth night with Birch Aquarium at Scripps!! 🪴 😶🌫️ 📏 In our latest #BUandBoston, we sat down with Arden Radford, a BU Earth and Environment & Environment and BU URBAN PhD candidate studying air quality in cities. Describing the study of air quality as studying the ingredients of an “atmospheric blended-up soup,” Arden looks at not only the obvious sources of major air pollution but also those that are small individually that add up to season the previously mentioned air soup. Her interest in studying the air in cities is shaped by her upbringing in Texas and Hong Kong and her undergraduate studies in Astronomy and Quantitative Economics. She sees air as a social and policy issue affecting those without the choice to choose the soup they consume. For the first time in Virginia, students will have an in-state, public option to earn an undergraduate degree in coastal & marine sciences. With formal approval from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), William & Mary’s new major will launch this fall, offering passionate students access to the Batten School & VIMS and hands-on learning opportunities in one of the nation’s most vital coastal regions. Expected to be complete in Summer 2025, the cutting-edge facility is replacing a 45-year-old lab, offering: ✅ 12 state-of-the-art faculty research labs ✅ Collaborative spaces for students and staff ✅ Integration with a world-class seawater system ✅ A sea turtle hospital and discovery lobby to connect the public with conservation and scientific innovation This project also marks Wells’ first field crew in Florida to install the prefabricated wall panels, enclosing this modern hub for marine science.
