On Day One of the Little Black Dress Initiative, we’re spotlighting Junior League of The Woodlands’ efforts in addressing education and literacy gaps. Did you know, in neighborhoods surrounding Title I Schools, only one book is available for every 300 children, compared to an average of 12 books for more affluent peers? This contributes to 70% of fourth-grade students from under-resourced environments with access to appropriate learning materials. Keys to Learning, a JLTW initiative, focuses on boosting access to books and educational resources for elementary school-aged children, emphasizing literacy and STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) for youth development. Your donation makes a real impact. In 2023, Keys to Learning distributed over 464 books at their annual Literacy Carnival. A small $20 donation puts five books in the hands of local elementary children. All funds raised help tackle poverty issues like literacy in our community. If you know anyone in Junior League of The Woodlands, Inc. - you know that this week is our "Little Black Dress Initiative". For 5 days, League Members will either wear a black dress or a black t-shirt and will raise funds/awareness around the programs we support as a league. We focus on teen empowerment on the second day of our LBDI campaign. Through InSTEP (In Support of Teen Empowerment and Progress), a Junior League of The Woodlands program, helps improve social skills, academic achievement, and self-esteem. One issue that InSTEP tackles is Period Poverty—a growing public health crisis and stigma that keeps girls out of school. 1 in 4 young women has missed school as a result of their lack of access to period products. Since the coronavirus pandemic, chronic absenteeism has increased nationwide, and Period Poverty is contributing to the rise. One study found that by 9th grade, every week a student misses school reduces that student’s chance of graduating by about 20%. Your donation makes a real impact. In the last two years, In STEP distributed over 100,000 feminine hygiene products across 8 school districts in North Harris and Montgomery County, combating the effects of Period Poverty and chronic absenteeism. Just $60 provides a 3-month supply of hygiene products through our Period Project program. All funds raised contribute to addressing poverty issues and supporting youth in our community. What if the world's wealthiest people decided to stop ignoring the intentional structure of the negative impacts of legislative actions which created both slavery and wealth gaps through financially oppressions to opportunities to keep the nation, culture and lineages of Black people as the laborers a nation of people with lineage ties to their enslaved ancestors. What if the philanthropist decided it is time to actually free those descendants mentally form the disparaging slanders to their dignity as humans from the start of the history of this nation which created financial oppressions and targeted legislative actions to keep them as a permanent under class of laborers with little means to get out of that financial trap? What if philanthropist began to address and support the enduring descendants black people in this nation whose national lineage and culture is tied to the history of intentional targeting and denials of wealth building opportunities, housing, education suppressions would the mindsets start to change, would crime go down would other Americans feel more at ease from the disease of racisms oppressions? What if philanthropist commit to an experiment to do something different like dedicate and take forty percent of their philanthropic giving over the next four years to a reparations trust fund to make an impact towards closing and dismantling the Black American wealth gaps build on the nations sordid history of harm, greed, inequities and denials specifically tied to the gaps and denials in the labor and pay for the enslaved peoples toils and that of the toils of their descendants. What if those funds were disbursed to eligible individuals and given as none taxable none income counted for other general benefits like social security, disability and retirements income eligibility for housing. Imagine it as RBI-Reprieve basic monthly stipends for 40 months renewable if needed to relieve some of history's financial stress. Imagine that it would provide more resource opportunities with less financial stress making them open to learning, getting more skills and investing to help close the wealth gap. Imagine it making the nation safer for everybody. We are 4-40-400.net project inspired by a man who had a dream that deserves actions. He was murdered on 4-4 wake up your support for the dream he left in our laps as descendants.

Check out my interview with ForbesBLK on the recent settlement in the Fearless Fund case.
The recent settlement in the Fearless Fund case is a victory for the Fund, charitable organizations, and investors who care about equity. The settlement allows the Fearless Fund to continue operating its current and future programs and avoids legal precedent that could endanger funding focused on addressing racial inequities. Alphonso David, Co-Counsel for the Fearless Fund, discussed the outcome in a conversation with ForbesBLK. https://lnkd.in/eZUaJh4q

Join us as we work to bail out Black mothers and femmes for Mothers Day through the Black Mamas Bail Out initiative. Black mothers and femmes are disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice system, and it is important that we come together to support and uplift them. In Delaware, Black mothers and femmes face many challenges and disparities within the criminal justice system. According to a report by the Sentencing Project, Black women are incarcerated at a rate of 115 per 100,000, which is nearly three times the rate of white women. This is due to a variety of factors such as systemic racism, poverty, and limited access to resources and support. By volunteering with Black Mothers in Power, you can help us raise funds and support for those who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Whether you can donate your time, skills, or resources, every little bit helps. 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: https://bit.ly/3R2K4N9

Rosilyn Temple, Founder & Program Director of KC Mothers in Charge, sheds light on the harsh reality faced by Black-led nonprofits in securing funding. Despite the critical role they play in community safety and support, these organizations often find themselves "overlooked by so many big grantees and federal funding", says Rosilyn. "That's a big thing that really hurts small Black-led [run] organizations." KC Mothers in Charge is a Nonprofit Catalyst Grantee that serves as a beacon of hope for those affected by the tragedy of homicide. Rosilyn Temple founded the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge in 2014, after losing her son PeeWee to homicide in 2011. "As a Black woman, people tell you that you're not going to make it. Well here I stand going on 11 years as an organization in this community." Today, KC Mothers In Charge operates as a team of four and continues their work to reduce violent crime through prevention, education and intervention. United Way is proud to support their mission. We met with five Black nonprofit leaders for a conversation centered around these challenges, with a specific focus on the ongoing struggle for adequate funding. Stay tuned as we share more stories. Read more of Rosilyn's story and how she has remained resilient while navigating these challenges: https://buff.ly/49j6zVp #BlackHistoryMonth

Data is key. Thank you to the Giving Gap for sharing this report today. I am sharing because it is that important to communicate and comprehend! See key finding below but please download the report also because there is so much you need to know! -Despite their unwavering commitment to addressing our country's greatest social challenges, Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth. -Passion and commitment don't pay the bills Despite their dedication, many leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints (62%). -Black nonprofits need to keep the lights on The top need identified by these organizations is financial support for general operations (97%), highlighting the importance of grants and contributions. -Money is key, but it isn't everything Success is not solely attributed to financial support. Leaders highlighted their strong skill sets, spiritual practices, and support networks as crucial factors. #BackBlack #Blacknonprofits #collectivegiving #collectivepower
