The commitment to meaningful engagement with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in international cooperation is essential for advancing disability rights and inclusion. However, there are notable gaps between this commitment and the current experiences of OPDs. Today marks the 34th Anniversary of when the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, which gave civil rights protection for people with disabilities. Today, we're sharing Deafblind Australia’s Story: “Our vision is a world where every deafblind person has access to the support and resources, they need to live a full and independent life. In this world, individuals with deafblindness can communicate, navigate, and thrive without barriers. However, the recent funding cuts have significantly reduced our ability to provide important supports and advocacy for the deafblind community. These cuts leave us struggling to maintain our programs and support our members effectively. To overcome this barrier, we need the government to return and increase funding for Disability Representative Organisations like Deafblind Australia. We urge our supporters, services, families, and community to write to their local MPs, share our message on social media, and sign our petition demanding fair funding. Together, we can ensure that the voices of the deafblind community are heard, and their needs are met”.
