This past week, I facilitated a company-wide conversation in a cross-collaborative EAGs effort. "The Journey Matters: Conversations with Women on Resilience and Empowerment" was an enriching conversation co-hosted with Shadari C. (part of the WEN leadership team), and me (I serve on the leadership team for SPARK and eMe-eLe-Te). We had the privilege of hearing from incredible women Tina Moore Gilbert (She.Her.Hers), Rosa Ballou, and Maria Razo, who shared how their roots and values shape their superpowers and unique leadership journeys. Thank you to Shadari, Tina, Rosa, and Maria for saying YES and your willingness to support me in bringing this idea to life. I'm beyond grateful to have been part of such an inspiring event, which highlighted these exceptional leaders and empowered our entire company community with insights to carry forward! Some advice that came from these resilient and empowered women was: ⚖️ Define what a successful career means to YOU while embracing the balance that work, though important, is just one part of a whole and meaningful life. 📈 Start investing early; the power of compound interest is real.  🦸🏽♀️ Take up space, stand firm in your worth, and embrace your presence.  🚦 Create and honor your boundaries. 🧗🏽♀️ Take risks and put yourself out there.  🔍 Focus on what truly matters; the things holding you back are rarely as important as they seem.

Jacqueline Gottlieb, president and CEO of the Hinton Rural Life Center in Hayesville and a graduate of our Rural Economic Development Institute, is featured in this month’s Alumni Spotlight. We appreciate her insights into rural leadership. What has been the impact of REDI or HGL on your leadership journey since completing the training, both personally and professionally? After attending both REDI and Leadership NC, I returned to my community and shared the opportunity with others. The push-back, total disinterest, and other mentioned roadblocks were fascinating to me. Some valid, some - just where you put your priorities. So, seven years ago, I worked to start a leadership program for our rural region. We are in the seventh year of hosting the program and will have over 100 alumni after the graduation in April 2024 from Leadership Chatuge Community Builders. What recent accomplishments, projects, initiatives, or points of pride would you like to share? Increasing awareness of the need for rural leadership development but the obstacles in attendance. Also, the critical need for solid infrastructure! What are the greatest assets in your rural community or region? The natural beauty. The retirees who are willing to volunteer. The people. What are the most significant economic development challenges facing your rural community or region today? Lack of knowledge about how the region operates, substance use, lack of economic opportunity, generational poverty, housing, transportation, etc. What advice would you offer to current or emerging leaders in rural areas? Listen closely and meet them where they are in order to make progress.

For a family business to remain in family ownership, there are three requisite foundations. For successful succession and continuity of ownership these must be built in tandem over time. The three foundations are: ✅ Asset Growth The accumulation of total family assets (to include the business) over time. Usually this means the ownership of and investment in a successful business - the family company - with a track record of value-adding management practice combined with prudent ownership. ✅ Family Consensus Agreement by the successors of the founders to remain together as a family in business. Evident as consensus within the family to a commitment to sustained ownership, around a core purpose and guided by the values of the founders. ✅ Family and Company Leadership Attraction, development and retention of both family and non-family individuals. Qualified individuals with specialist, generalist and entrepreneurial expertise to meet the current and future leadership needs of the business and those of the family. Last week, I had the privilege of facilitating Britam's Board Development Program at Strathmore Business School. This is an annual program, undertaken by all Britam Holdings and subsidiaries Directors. This year's program featured the theme "The Board of the Future" and insightful keynotes from Kieran Moynihan, Managing Partner at Board Excellence. Kieran emphasized the crucial elements of a high-performing board team, highlighting that Board leadership contributes 20% to board success, with CEO/CS/EXCO support and partnership adding 15%. Factors such as Board composition, diversity, work ethic, quality debate, strategic capability, and performance culture were also noted as significant contributors. According to Kieran, fostering a genuine "board team" that supports and empowers the CEO/Executive team is essential for effective oversight.
