I'm asked almost weekly to connect with folks that are looking to explore a career shift. And what I hear most often is a burning desire for something different, but a fear of leaving something on the table. My advice: stop short changing yourself. The corporate world is ripe with structural inertia. Between bonuses being paid out in January, 401(k) match hitting in late February, and promotions occurring some time in between, employees are continually reminded of the opportunity cost of leaving. This is not innately a bad thing, but it does tend to stifle curiosity and exploration. What else is out there for you? Literally every other company in the world. A few tips: Step #1: allow yourself to be curious. It's okay. You're not being unfaithful or disloyal. Step #2: If you are a consumer of a product or service, start thinking about that as a potential employer. It will expand your idea of what's possible. Step #3: have casual conversations with folks in completely different industries. Make sure it's casual. You don't need to put pressure on yourself to find a job ASAP. This is just about getting a sense for what the heck is possible. Step #4: don't miss the forest for the trees. Sometimes a step back in cash comp is worth a whole lot more in happiness (and equity) Step #5: repeat 1-4 until something clicks

A few of my acquaintances have been asking me if because I am now 'The Job Search Maverick' have I've changed my job? The implication of the word/s left unsaid, which is... "AGAIN?"..., is so heavy in the air, it feels like a a thunderous rain cloud about to burst so much JUDGEMENT over my head! Don't worry. I expected as much and I do not judge them in return. They cannot understand my career navigations and so to them it feels like I am all over the place. But I am someone who pretty much 'marches to the beat of my own personal drum' and sometimes I meet with similar folk who beat alongside me and at other times it's an off-key mess! Yes, in 2024 I am 'The Job Search Maverick' and 'not for nowt' am confident with it! Because while the titles may be new... it is my way of updating and refreshing where I am at with my career, MAKE NO MISTAKE, I am am ever yet she! Maria, or Riah as I prefer, am still the passionate personal and professional people development coach and consultant. Nothing there, if paying any small attention, has really changed, except that I do what I preach with regards to career development, in that you should constantly be cultivating, refreshing and updating who you are for where you are! I'm still doing much of the consulting work I have been doing in organizational development and HR, I don't just abandon clients, but over time I saw there was a greater need from my potential clients post Covid in the Job Search market. I was doing this already as part of my people development role, but decided to move and hone in with a little more focus on it in 2024. I've perhaps lessened the degree to which I still do some of those other tasks and expanded the Job Search Maverick work to respond to that need. It's still in the People Development arena isn't it? It's ALL ABOUT PEOPLE! It always is for me. I haven't changed that much I've only changed focus. As I reflect on the past, and I watched this old introductory video of me from years back, I marvelled at how while I know how much I've grown since those years, pretty much all of what it states within it still applies to me! I have changed, that's true, but the core parts of me, that keep me who I am, are still the same. And there is a kind rewarding feeling to discover that I do have a personality that is consistent, even if I do change my 'hat' every once in a while! Happy Reflective Sunday LinkedIn Fam! When she told me her career story, which I have all my clients do, her story was riddled with a highway of situations where she was taken advantage of, where she wasn't given the respect that she deserved.As a career coach, I have each person tell me their career story because I can always tell, based on the story, where your sticking points and roadblocks are. And for this woman, it clearly was getting herself into situations where they wouldn't respect her. She was almost in tears while telling me this, but she was still so professional, and then she said, "What is it going to take, JT? What is it going to take for me to get into one of these environments and not be taken advantage of?"I didn't want to give her a pat answer, so I said I was going to sleep on it and then come back and tell her the traits I see in people who are respected at work and, therefore, get the best career opportunities. I want to share those five traits with you because I think it's important that everyone hear them.1. They See Themselves As A Business-Of-One.The first trait I see in people who are respected at work is they always see themselves as a business-of-one. They don't work for a company. They work with them. They partner with them. Therefore, right out of the gate, there's mutual respect. Then, if they start disrespecting you, you can have a conversation and tell them that they're either going to get this right or you're going to go find a new partner because you're not going to be treated that way. You're not going to allow yourself to be treated that way. It's about setting boundaries and addressing the disrespect before it gets out of hand. Respected employees are able to communicate these boundaries without being harsh. 2. They Aren't Complainers; They're Curious.The second trait is they aren't complainers; they're curious. Nobody likes to work with complainers. The people who are respected at work don't walk in and dump a problem on a manager's desk. Instead, when they see a problem, they meet with people and they get curious. They ask questions. They try to understand. In fact, one of their favorite phrases to use is "help me understand." They ask clarifying questions to get to the source of the problem so that hopefully the people they're talking to can realize the problem, but if not, it gives them permission to then point it out and have a conversation.3. They Ask Questions Instead Of Bossing People Around. The third trait is they get really good at "ask, don't tell." They don't boss everyone around. They don't tell everyone what to do. They know how to ask questions so that things become other people's ideas and they get permission to then share their points of view, their ideas, and their perspectives. It's how they get buy-in.
