Hiring Conformity I think if you ask HR people whether they would hire a "Technician" or a "Genius" they will pick a Technician 99% of the time. A genius thinks out side of the box and will advance your organization but they will be completely disruptive - great ideas do not come without pain. The technician fits the company mould - you can easily slot them into the team, they won't ruffle feathers and the work will be predictable. If you are consulting, you want to present competence to your client - a proven roadmap with a stable team. So, what do the rest of us do - we either tone down our thinking and look, or we struggle to find a job where we fit. This is the situation where you need to work for yourself, or work with like-minded people. Some of the best teams are very diverse with a big range of personalities. We can dare to be different. Some of the coolest people I know are very, very different - but I applaud that completely.

Technician recruiting is wild these days…. Used to it was good enough to promise loads of work, give a great pay plan, provide structure, and a good environment. Technicians would show up and show out! They felt appreciated because of all the above. It was a beautiful thing! Technicians understood it was a two way relationship of give and take on both sides. Now, it’s… “Give me all the money before I show you what I can do” “It better be a guarantee” “I want $25 more per hour than the market” “Don’t require me to hit a goal of any sort” “Don’t expect me to accept responsibility or respond well to accountability of any sort” “I’ll work on my terms, not in the best interest of the customer or the dealership” I know that technicians have not been favored well through the years but man, it sure makes it hard for us guys out there trying to do the right things. Image recognition isn’t just for your field team. I was surprised too. One of my prospective clients showed me how their field personnel monitoring system works. To be honest, it isn’t automated at all. Operators assign tasks and collect reports; all is done manually but through set of apps. You can imagine how overloaded and tired these people are: mundane administrative work eats up most of their time. Sadly, they often leave the company due to this enormous load and inevitable burnout. That results in an above-average staff rotation. So, we have developed a solution, nothing fancy ;) A field technician collects data via IR for both new and completed tasks. The software then handles the subsequent steps, generating reports and automatically filling in all the details about the location, type of task, and both suggested and completed steps to address the issue, including detailed fixture steps. It allocates a specific amount of time for each step of the task, provides a comprehensive report on the time spent by the user, and identifies the most significant bottleneck of the day. As a result, all the administrative work is machine-based. Operators can focus on what they should be doing—guiding field technicians and providing support when needed. How does the client benefit from this? They won’t need to hire and train new operators repeatedly. The turnover drops, and that means two things: huge savings for the HR department and an improved reputation, leading to a multitude of long-term benefits, like easy hiring and a boost in sales.
