Lots of new filmmakers& photographers don’t realise that there’s 2 kinds of chromatic aberration: Lateral & Longitudinal Here’s the difference and how you can realistically recognise them But first, a quick physics class on how chromatic aberration happens Ideally, you’d want your lens to refract all the wavelengths (colours) of light together, instead of splitting them at different angles like a prism. This helps to accurately project the colour of the object. But, this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes, wavelengths (usually green or magenta) aren’t perfectly refracted. This manifests as coloured shades or outlines in your shots that shouldn’t be there, called colour fringing. That’s what chromatic aberration (CA) causes. Lateral CA: Fringing usually happens at the edges of high-contrast areas when they’re in focus, creating this coloured outline Longitudinal CA: Fringing usually happens in out of focus areas, creating a green or magenta cast there #filmmaking #photography #lenses
