California #Wheat served in California #schools 🌾🌾🌾 Once someone asked me: "why Wheat2School? and how it fits in with your work for the California Wheat Commission ?" I answered: "it targets every aspect of our #mission including market development, research, outreach, and education" 📈 Market development: we are reducing barriers, creating a roadmap, and opening up a new market for California Wheat producers. 🧬🍞 Research: In order to develop school meals approved recipes, we have done a lot of research and development (trial and error) inside our wheat lab using California wheat varieties. All recipes have been shared with the schools for implementation. 👋🏼 Outreach: developing new partnerships, bringing in awareness, and getting new grants have all been part of this objective. 📚 Education: our CA Wheat law states that is paramount that the CA Wheat Commission develops programs about wheat nutrition education. Our program is doing that and more. So, here you go! San Miguel Unified School District is an example of our success story that delivers every component of our Wheat2School program as a final food product served to students. More about this here:

I recently published a children’s book called 'I'd Rather Eat Chocolate' - a fun story with rhyme, rhythm and some repetitive text, to meet my first passion – helping children fall in love with reading. But there are lots of beautiful books out there, so what makes mine so special? My story follows a boy, whose dad wants him to eat up his veggies. The son replies he’d ‘rather eat chocolate, a cake or French-fry’. Wouldn’t we all? As the story unfolds, the boy learns which animals eat which veggies, and how those veggies help the crazy animals to move and play. So here’s the crux….. Studies have shown that engaging children in books can influence a child’s behaviours.   ·      For example the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (2019) found that exposing children to stories and play around an unfamiliar vegetable, increased consumption of that veggie ·       Parents are busy juggling family with work, ·      processed foods are marketed to parents as healthy options for their kids ·      A recent article in the Guardian revealed 100% of baby and toddler foods in Australian shops failed to meet WHO standards ·      So it's no wonder the ABS found only 9% of children aged 2-17, eat enough veggies ·      Already I'm receiving feedback 'Id Rather Eat Chocolate' is inspiring children to eat up their veggies - broccoli being the winner! I know ‘I’d Rather Eat Chocolate’ is having a positive impact on children’s food choices, yet without a traditional publishing contract, my distribution channels are limited.  Enter my vision to have my story available in every rural and regional library in Australia. Just like that, maple sugaring season has come to a close. I had the privilege to coordinate the timeless event for the York County Parks. 🍁 During our volunteer appreciation banquet, I publicly posed the question to our team, "what makes an event such as this successful"? Was this event defined as success due to statistics such as how much product we sold, quantity of admission sales, and the amount of maple sap collected? Some might say yes; equity equals success in a program. I on the other hand found this event to be a colossal success because of the value it had on the surrounding community. In our modern-day society humans are in a constant rush. Days go by quick, weeks come suddenly, and years are rapid. Maple Sugaring Days gave nearly 2,000 community members the opportunity to SLOW DOWN and live in the moment! Quality time spent with spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. We gave nearly 2,000 community members the opportunity to learn! True education is easy to portray onto a young first grade student that absorbs information like a sponge, it is another accomplishment for that young student's grandparent who has years of fulfilled life experience to learn something new also. We gave nearly 2,000 community members the opportunity to get outside! People have lethargic tendencies with their smart devices. Thus, making the time we spend in natural places even more valuable. 🍁 The definition of success varies among individuals. My perspective of success was based off our ability to provide so many community members the opportunity to slow down from their chaotic schedules and replace the hustle with wholesome memories, true education, and rejuvenate human to nature relationships. That is why Maple Sugaring Days 2024 was a success.
