Capturing our potential future leaders 🗳 As you may have seen, I spent three days last week photographing and videoing the students who were part of this year's Future Parliament Programme with Hull College, Hull University Business School, led by Emma Hardy MP. The first day on Wednesday was a tough one, with a room full of quiet and very nervous students hiding away in themselves. It's tough to capture, naturally. But we managed to get the shots we needed and took into account the nerves. Day two, and you start to see glimmers of confidence. I kept to the sides and shot over other people's shoulders in order to reduce the fact they are having their pictures taken and any unnecessary nerves. I personally know there's nothing worse than trying to listen with some trigger happy photographer thinking standing above/in front of you will ‘make a great shot’. It won't, bugger off. But day three rolls around, the final day with speeches. I have my two camera setup, one video tripod, and another to capture images, thinking this will surely make even grown adults quiver. But, despite it all and after only 2 days, I stood listening to some extremely calm, collected, and confident students giving real world and very tough subject speeches in front of a big room. Not one student seemed phased by all of the people there, let alone me and my truck load of camera gear. Every shoot is always different, and when it comes to capturing people you really have to make everyone as comfortable as possible. After three days, these students went from hiding from a camera, to excitedly volunteering to have video testimonials. Safe to say it worked and we got some lovely shots and footage of these future leaders in the making.
