📣 Relief Needed for Charities Facing Rising Costs Following Chancellor’s Budget. Yesterday, on BBC Radio 5 live with Nicky Campbell, our CEO, Keith Sinclair, spoke on the unprecedented challenges facing charities like ours due to announcements in this week’s budget. With the rising cost of living and increased operational costs, not-for-profit organisations supporting vulnerable families will find themselves in even more challenging times from April 2025. "Charities are navigating the same economic pressures as for-profit businesses, from rising operational costs to the challenges of maintaining vital support services. However, we lack the ability to mitigate these costs by adjusting our pricing to pass these on. For families relying on our support-who already face higher living expenses from raising a child with a disability-this puts vital services at risk," explained Keith Sinclair. The Chancellor's adjustments to employers’ National Insurance contributions will particularly impact the finances of many charitable organisations. Brainwave are calling on the government to consider an exemption from these increases for not-for-profit organisations like ours; to safeguard the vital support we provide to children and families. "These changes will put additional pressures on our team in generating additional funds to meet these costs, in an already challenging environment. Now more than ever, we urge the government to recognise the unique pressures charities face and offer support.” Keith Sinclair added. #Budget2024 #Budget #budgetchallenges #brainwavecharity #support #charity

Public service announcement: Most GoFundMe 'donations' are not tax deductible, and while you should still keep helping others, don't expect to include it in your tax return. Anyone can set up a GoFundMe page. There are GoFundMe pages to help sporting teams, support someone going through illness or even just pay for a neighbours living costs after a tragic incident. I recently contributed to my nephews local primary school. However, donations may only be tax deductible in Australia if they are made to deductible gift recipients ("DGRs"), only the ATO can endorse an organisation as a DGR following specific criteria. ABR website provides information on whether the organisation is a DGR. There are some DGRs who do operate through GoFundMe, which will made the donation tax deductible. However, most are set up by individuals to help someone in need temporarily, and the recipient is often not an eligible DGR. This means, that it is NOT tax deductible. So please, help others where you can. But also recognise that donating $100 to a non DGR GoFundMe page is the equivalent of giving your mate $100. It helps your mate, makes you feel good, but that doesn't mean its tax deductible. Your accountant doesn't need a screenshot of your GoFundMe donation.

Big news for donors and charities! The federal government has announced that donations made until February 28, 2025 will be eligible for tax support in the 2024 tax year. This decision comes in response to the four-week Canada Post mail stoppage, which disrupted mailing campaigns for many charities during the busy holiday season. More than 40% of donations typically come in during this time. Thanks to advocacy from Imagine Canada, Cooperation Canada, and the Health Charities Coalition of Canada Inc., donors now have more time to contribute, ensuring their donations are processed and tax-receipt eligible. This is an important opportunity for late tax planning in the new year! #CharitableDonations #TaxPlanning #SupportNonprofits

Could you pledge the cost of a coffee or two each week, to support our Charity? Whilst representing excellent value for money and achieving a priceless impact on those we care for, our innovative 24hour specialist palliative service is set to cost in excess of £890,000 in the coming year, and ours is a service funded entirely by the community, for the community. Those that pledge to give regularly offer a real boost to our Charity - providing surety of service for those currently in our care and reassurance for future patients in our community too. ⬇ Pledging as little as £5.00 per week - less than the cost of the average takeaway coffee and cookie - by setting up a Regular Giving Plan, would have a real impact... ⬇ Your £20.00 per month could pay for not one, but two Wellbeing Meals for a patient, in the company of fellow patients and friends at our Wellbeing Centre... ⬇ Your £20.00 per month could cover the cost of transporting a patient and their loved one to and from a vital medical appointment in the city by one of our Volunteer drivers, providing practical support and lessening stress... ⬇ Across the course of a year, your £20.00 per month would enable three family members to access continued and invaluable Bereavement Support from our trained team... Every donation makes a difference 💙 Plus, there can be benefits for employees through Payroll Giving, where your donation gets deducted before you pay tax. For example, if you donate £5, the cost to you in your take-home pay is £4 and HMRC pays the rest ✅ Setting up a plan to give is simple. Just click on the link, select the monthly donation amount that feels right for you, and pop in some details. ▶ https://lnkd.in/eZnn5Gwq ps... Don't forget to tick the GiftAid box! When you donate through Gift Aid, we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. This additional amount is provided by the government, and it does not cost you any extra. For example, with Gift Aid, a monthly donation of £40 will be worth £50 at no extra cost to you. Thank you. #RegularGiving #hospiceathome #community #charity #sidmouthmodel #payrollgiving #giveback

💸 Are Your Tithes Tax-Deductible? Here's What You Need to Know ⛪ Tithing, the practice of donating a portion of your income to your church, is not just a spiritual act—it can also have tax implications. If your church is a qualified tax-exempt organization under IRS Code Section 501(c)(3), your tithes may be considered charitable donations, making them eligible for tax deductions. However, there are specific conditions and limits to be aware of. 📌 Key Points to Consider - IRS Rules: Your church must be recognized as tax-exempt by the IRS for your tithes to qualify as deductible. - Deductibility: To deduct your tithes, you must itemize your deductions on your tax return, and ensure you have proper documentation, especially for donations over $250. - Reporting Requirements: Large non-cash contributions and donations require additional IRS forms and documentation. - Contribution Limits: You can generally deduct up to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash donations to public charities, including churches. For donors, understanding these rules is crucial to maximizing your tax benefits while supporting your faith. Always consider consulting with a tax advisor to ensure compliance and to make the most of your charitable giving. #TaxTips #CharitableGiving #Tithing #TaxDeductible #IRS #ChurchDonations #FinancialPlanning

Christmas Cheer and Tax Relief 🎄 It’s only right given what week it is to make it all about giving this week ❤️ but did you know that your festive generosity could go even further this Christmas? When you donate to charity in the UK, the Gift Aid scheme allows charities to claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate—at ZERO extra cost to you! That means a £20 donation turns into £25, helping charities make an even bigger impact during the season of giving. As accountants, we often get to see how these small acts of generosity can add up to significant change in tax relief, make sure you always take a note of your donations. Whether you’re donating to a local food bank, a national charity, or even just popping some change into a festive collection box, make sure you ALWAYS tick the Gift Aid box if you’re eligible. This little tip can make a big difference. Putting my money where my mouth is (literally) I signed at the St Andrew's Hospice (Lanarkshire) and got my own gift aid diner card this week ☺️ it means anytime I donate I no longer have to fill in the form as I’m on their system, I just scan away. Zero effort from me - money in the bank for them 🙌 Spread the word and help out. Why not tell one other person this week about gift aid 🎁❤️ #ChristmasGiving #Charity #AccountancyTips #GiftAid #MakeADifference

If charitable giving is on your mind, consider a tax reduction strategy called “bunching.” Only donations to IRS-approved charities are deductible, and only if you itemize. However, itemizing is less common since the standard deduction nearly doubled (for 2018-2025, unless extended by Congress). Bunching may allow you to benefit from the standard and itemized deductions by consolidating donations into alternating years. In gift years, make larger donations and itemize. In off years, skip donations and claim the standard deduction. This strategy can also apply to other eligible itemizable expenses, such as mortgage interest, property taxes and planned medical costs.
