2.3 million equates somewhere near 4% of all workers in Japan - and growing exponentially. If only 2.5% of Japan is “foreign”, that proportion is substantial… There are some tough barriers for entry into Japan, but since I arrived in 2005, the consistency of incoming foreign workers staying and thriving seems to keep getting better and better. Yes, many mistakes and nasty mishaps along the way, but overall Japan appears to be succeeding. If this trend continues, we can assume the proportion of foreigners in Japan’s workforce to be something in the range of 10% or higher before 2030. All this could be elastic with a single big disaster, or if AI integrates into the workforce at a rate beyond our expectations. #humanresources #management #sustainability #immigration #diversity

🐝 Foreign workers in Japan are younger, have shorter tenure, and earn lower wages compared to Japanese workers 🐝 In 2023, the total foreign workers in Japan reached 2 million, making up 3.4% of total employees. Foreign workers earn 28% less than Japanese workers, largely attributed to age, tenure, and other factors. Highly skilled foreign workers with longer working experience in Japan tend to earn higher wages than Japanese workers. Although wages is not only measure of career success, investing in upskilling or reskilling early on can help boost earnings, especially as the job market becomes more competitive. SINGAPORE, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Thursday urged political leaders in Singapore, a leading global financial hub, to seek fair wages for the country's million-plus lower-paid foreign workers. I fully support this advice 💒 Whenever I ask why Collaborative Robotics AI cannot be implemented in our operations? There always cheaper labour from overseas willing to work much lower than any machine available, even the most advanced and productive ones. Now, as the true cost of labour comes about, this will reflect the possibility for reality to getting Digitalization and Machine Intelligence to assist and augment Singaporean Workers, not just only hiring from overseas as Assistants.

KKK (no, not that one) Kitanai, kitsui, kiken. Dirty, hard, and dangerous (ok, maybe should have used “DHD”. These three adjectives used to define foreign workers jobs in Japan. Things have changed, slightly. All Time High Nikkei Asia Asia reports that foreign workers are at all time high, now 3.4% of the working population. Actually everything to do with foreigners is at an all time high so this is not a surprise. White Collar What is interesting is the jump in specified skill jobs up 49% to 200,000. Cheap, Clean, and Safe This one is mine from talking to many people who have travelled and moved to Japan. Even without Japanese language skills, many at zero, Japan provides an attractive place to hang your shingle. Many expats #transition to local hires instead of going back home. Expect this to continue over the next decade as these above three points are the killer app, IMHO. The Time They Are A Changin’ #expat #workforce #labor https://lnkd.in/gtgrwyYg
