I am not a… I created this post because I constantly struggle with my identity, and what this means to the people whom I want to work with. The standard marketing thing is to identify your ideal client avatar – their role, their field/domain, their problems, their age group, their whatever! The problem is that I am a generalist who operates and learns across multiple domains. So who is my ICA?! I am not a safety professional. I don’t have ‘safety’ qualifications, other than a MSc in HF and System Safety. But I am heavily involved in the world of ‘safe’ outcomes, no matter what field. I am not an L&D professional. But I design courses and help with outcomes, running two ‘training’ businesses, The Human Diver and Human in the System. I also deliver ‘train the trainer’ programmes for #nontechnicalskills using #interpersonalskillsLAB from NINECUBES and my own materials. I am not a risk professional. But my whole life has been about the practical aspects of risk management across different systems: low-level flight operations in the RAF, flight instructor on C-130 Hercules, requirements manager for defensive aids systems, deep wreck SCUBA diver, rebreather diver, and small business owner. I am not an HR professional. But I have read deeply on #psychologicalsafety and #justculture through my personal and professional development. I am not a software professional. But I do know that software companies operate in teams and deal with risk, and that is where I have significant experience. I am not an academic. But I love to learn what is out there, using the research to inform my learning-focused programmes. I have completed two MSc (one aerospace, one HF and System Safety), written a book and multiple papers. I am not a leadership expert. But leadership is part of what I need to do to lead a small team of instructors working in the dysfunctional domain of diving to bring #humanfactors to the fore. It is also a key skill in the non-technical skills framework I use. I am not an artist. But I am creative. I am not pigeonholeable (is that a word?!) What I am… Passionate about learning. Transforming teams through guided discovery. Unlocking the human potential with individuals, teams, and organisations. Curious. A curiosity.
