Google’s Orion SDN: A Distributed Powerhouse! 🌟 🔗 Read Time: 2 minutes 🚀 Introduction: Google’s Software-Defined Networking (SDN) platform, Orion, is a game-changer in network management. Let’s dive into the details: Architecture: Orion is a distributed SDN platform deployed globally in Google’s data centers (Jupiter) and Wide Area networks (B4). It follows a modular, micro-service architecture with a central publish-subscribe database. Enables a distributed yet tightly-coupled control system for software-defined network management. Features: Intent-based management and control: Orion allows network management based on high-level intents. Scalability: Handles large networks with improved performance (up to 40x faster) and throughput (1.16 million network updates per second). Data plane availability: Reduced unavailable time (50x to 100x) in Jupiter and B4 networks. Bi-weekly release cadence: Maintains high development velocity.
