In early spring 2024, Google announced its intention to launch the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in the European Economic Area (EEA). However, the rollout has encountered some delays. The introduction of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in March 2024, which aims to harmonize platform regulations across the EU and ensure fair and open digital markets, has played a role in these postponements. Google has until next year to fully comply with the DMA requirements, which has impacted the timeline for SGE's introduction in Europe. Consequently, Europeans are eagerly anticipating this new way of navigating the Internet, a significant departure from the past 25 years of typing keywords into a search box and receiving a list of ranked links. While we might find features like Circle to Search (https://lnkd.in/d-qHuhGq) impressive, it’s worth noting that interacting with digital screens using only fingers was popularized by Apple with their smartphones 20 years ago. It's now time to innovate new ways of engaging with smart devices, which are becoming increasingly intelligent with AI. Personal assistance technology is on the horizon, poised to help us everywhere we go. I found the Google Lens to be a godsend in many tricky situations. Suddenly I had less need to think of possible “keywords” or modify & repeat the search query 👀 multiple times to find related variations in search results! Now I cant wait to try the soon to come “circle / scribble / highlight / tap” to search on Google. It’s probably going to make my social browsing even more distracting but I expect it will also improve my learning by search more time efficient. Let’s see! Big blow to the world's largest search engine. Regardless, the Pixel 9 series will yet again do what the Pixel 8 series did in 2023. Announced earlier this month and now part of the January Feature Drop, Circle to Search is rolling out to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. This feature is the latest version of "Now on Tap," "What's on my screen?" in Assistant, and later "Search screen." To use Circle to Search, long-press on the nav handle if you have gesture navigation enabled.
