This is great news for the people of Cambridge, and a shining model of how this should be done, but it highlights, again, severe regional disparities West Mids has a population of ~7m, with some of the most deprived regions in England. 1) We lost our CRUK Centre due to lack of funding 2) Our Experimental Cancer Medicine Unit is time limited due to a lack of funding 3) The building I carry out research in is 63 years old, whereas the CRUK building in Cambridge this is replacing was built after I joined Birmingham 12 years ago! 4) Our cancer centre which treats by volume, for example, in colorectal cancer the highest number of patients in the UK and is in space build in the 90s designed for 1/3rd of the current patient volume 5) Patient survival rates in WM are worse compared to the “Greater Southeast” with no plan in sight. It’s not because we are any poorer clinicians or scientists (UoB research ranked 2nd for oncology in UK recently) Surely the patients of the West Midlands and the other regions deserve this level of investment? You won’t attract great science, great healthcare or great outcomes to a region unless you invest… which we (and others) just don’t get enough
