A very important conversation. Student choice is the key to get kids reading and keep them reading. There must be a wide range of books available you can have in classroom libraries . We must STOP leveling books that limit a child’s interest and potential, and affects their self esteem . Providing high interest books at every reading level is key . The graphic novel should be a limited choice for independent reading. Reading logs are the best samples of fiction to date . And, for goodness sake, teachers MUST read what the kids are reading . That the only way to have conversation that promote critical thinking. Encouragement of a teacher reading community is an excellent way to accomplish the true meaning of a learning destination. I had more fascinating conversations about Katniss than expected. It was amazing 🤩
Love your concept. Accountability is key for students , teachers and administrators. I believe that the most effective teaching comes when the teacher has the freedom to choose materials . As I am interested in effective teaching outcomes and confidence in early career teachers, my question is how can we help teachers who have no choice in materials, develop enthusiasm? If the teacher is excited then that resonates with their kid. Experience has taught us that if we are not thrilled with a text , short story or class novel, our kids pick that up quickly . Ready to discuss anytime😊

3moSuch a great question Robin Dansky! I agree that enthusiasm is such an important factor we don’t always give enough attention to and that there is no better way to kill enthusiasm than to take away choice and autonomy from teachers and students. What you’re making me think about is how we can select materials that pique the interest of both: how do we center student choice and autonomy, while also ensuring we are tapping into the enthusiasm and excitement of their teachers? How can we ensure that students and teachers are getting robust materials that aren’t just mandated, but are chosen purposefully? And for schools and classrooms that do have mandated curriculum, how can we use professional learning communities to stir up some enthusiasm in what may at first glance feel dull or unexciting? Love this convo!
