Have you been watching the Olympics? The games have got us thinking…
In many ways the Olympics are like the performing arts and culture sector, people pushing boundaries, performing at their best, and bringing spectators together in awe✨.
Art and sport do have their differences though:
🏅 They’re in different parts of the news
🏅 They happen in different spaces
🏅 Their patrons have distinctly different stereotypes
🏅 In school people often find themselves in the artsy crowd or the sporty crowd
🏅 At a sports game, partisanship is a key part of the fun; at an Arts event the audience arrives as one group, all supporting the same team, and in that sense (as well as literally) they’re all facing the same way.
But we know that at its core, the arts are about bringing together the unexpected, and subverting the norm. It makes us wonder how art and sport can be brought together more, and we know there are some great programs already doing just that, and increasing the accessibility of each industry for communities.
What do you think? Are art and sport so different, or is it like the old Art vs Science debate, where it’s actually their interaction that brings the most benefit?
