The Olympics are in full swing! And while the Brits competing in Paris have already come away with a few medals, many watching at home might not be having the same positive experience. Viewers have started to notice that the BBC can only display two streams of Olympics coverage simultaneously — a significant departure from the 24 channels of the London and Rio Olympics. That’s because in 2015, Warner Bros. Discovery made an exclusive deal for the European rights to the Olympics, with the BBC only managing to retain two channels thanks to legislation forbidding ‘key’ sporting events appearing exclusively on paid-for TV. And although this arrangement has been in place since the Tokyo Olympics, the limited options have become more conspicuous now that there isn’t a significant time zone difference and more consumers can tune in live. Bango: Subscriptions, bundling & payments’s Subscription Wars 2024 report [ https://lnkd.in/eMUArwXR ] found that one in five (20%) UK sports fans planned to sign up for a new streaming service exclusively to watch the Olympics — but this number will inevitably rise as more consumers become aware of their restricted choices on the BBC. This arrangement will continue until 2032, and likely beyond — sports streaming is incredibly competitive and, with more challengers entering the fray to compete for gold on a daily basis, the BBC will struggle in the bidding war. So, a question for fellow Brits: were you aware of these constraints on the BBC, and does this affect your decision to buy a new subscription for the Olympics? https://lnkd.in/eCfWA3-E #OlympicGames #Streaming #SportsVOD

To stream or not to stream - how do Olympics fans in the UK/US plan to watch the Paris 2024 Olympics? 💡 In my last post I looked at the most eagerly anticipated sports for this summer’s Olympics, so this time I thought I’d check out how fans plan to watch those sports, and how this is evolving over time. Lately, it seems everywhere you look we’re being told that streaming is taking over, and traditional broadcast TV will soon be left behind. Based on this, you’d assume that many Olympics fans plan to view on their local streaming services. However, a recent GWI report suggests that TV is still king, for now… In the UK and US, around 5 in 10 internet users plan to watch the Paris 2024 Olympics live on TV 📺 , compared to just 2 in 10 who plan to watch live via streaming 💻 . This is a surprising stat, especially when you consider that an average Olympics produces around 10,000 hours worth of content (source: IOC, see link below), a volume which is far better suited to online streaming platforms than broadcast TV. Perhaps it is this wealth of content that’s caused the number planning to stream highlights online to grow by 12% since Tokyo. What’s most interesting to me is that the number of Olympics fans planning to watch live via streaming has declined, whilst the number planning to watch live on TV has grown since Tokyo 2020 (see chart). This is a surprising stat, but it’s important to note that these figures are based on intentions, not actions. It could be the case that when the Olympics rolls around, fans will be drawn to the convenience and additional features available on streaming platforms (such as Peacock’s purpose-made multi-view feature that’ll make its debut this summer). We’ll be keeping an eye on how intentions compare to actions during the Paris Olympics, so watch this space... Want to know more about GWI and how we could help you and your organisation? 'Excellence, Respect, Friendship' - the Olympic values to which, it seems, has covertly been added 'Profitability'. Changes to the UK media landscape with the 2024 Media Act and Warner Bros Discovery's acquisition of European Olympic broadcast rights in 2018 may have a greater impact on your viewing options than you realise. https://lnkd.in/dEQP3XSs For those in the UK eager to dive, subscription-free, into the quadrennial media extravaganza that is the Summer Olympic Games, details of the BBC's coverage can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dfh3yEpA Find out more about the WBD partnership with the BBC and what it means for the coverage of the Olympic Games 2024 and future Games here: https://lnkd.in/dBBp6vYR It seems that London 2012's exceptional free-to-access multimedia, multi-platform presence did not set the standard for coverage of future Olympics after all. #Olympics #BBC #MediaCoverage #FasterHigherStronger

Really interesting article- certainly mirrors the data we’ve seen from Futures Sport & Entertainment too. The Guardian article states…“Broadcast TV figures have plummeted by 26% since 2015 – yet sport is the bubble that refuses to burst, the ratings winner that bucks the trend. Over the same period, it has fallen just 3%.” 🤯 Whilst media fragmentation continues to accelerate, findings from “Game Changing: How sport makes us happier, healthier and better connected”, published by Sky and compiled by the policy agency Public First, stated that UK adults “have spent approximately 9.1bn hours watching and participating in sports” and an impressive “15m people across the UK…(stated) that sport is an important part of their identity…” Which suggests to me sport appetite as a whole remains strong and whilst consumption habits are evolving, linear TV still has a major role to play 🤔👀📺 Kishan Radia Nitharsan Sathiyalingam
“On Sunday 1 September, Sky Sports had its highest ever share of total TV viewing audiences for under-35s and women between 2pm and 6pm.” A fascinating piece looking at the importance of sport in the UK broadcast landscape.

🤳 Will online streaming overtake TV broadcasts for the 2024 Olympics? 🏅 The 2024 Summer Olympics – our first since the end of the pandemic – starts today with football and rugby sevens as the first events on the calendar. Outside of new additions such as breakdancing, something else is taking place. 🔎 How we follow the Olympics comes with the advances of time. Previously, TV had allowed the world’s millions of sports fans to follow their favourite events live. Now, streaming, online content, and up-close and personal docuseries – innovations brought by new age players – countless thousands of hours of Olympics content can be viewed at the tip of your fingertips and completely up to your choosing. 🖥 Online sports streaming has become more and more popular. Quoting Jérôme Parmentier of the IOC, “In the last two Games, digital-only consumption was only 10-15%. I assume it will be higher this time, but how much higher is the question. We’ll know on 13 August. And I'm very optimistic also on advertisers – we see very positive signs in the US and in France as a host country.” 🤔 A recent pre-Olympic survey has also pointed out that for younger audiences (18-35), online streaming has almost superseded TV broadcasts as a preferred method of watching the 2024 Summer Olympics. Will sports streaming finally overtake TV? Like what Mr Parmentier said, we will see on 13 August. Bein sports' hegemony over sports #broadcasting in #MENA region has been unparalleled and virtually unchallenged over the past decade. Saudi Arabia's SSC network is mounting a challenge to do so. Sports broadcasting has been an arena for competition and bitter rivalry between the Gulf monarchies over the past decades. KSA efforts have been numerous, and not always legal as I have mentionned in my 2020 "EUROMESCO - Infrastructures and Power in the Middle East and North Africa" paper about the the BEoutQ hacking which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/eKfcHJt

📡 Olympic Broadcasting has undergone multiple phases of evolution since the inception of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. 📺 The journey from limited local coverage to extensive global broadcasts reflects the advancements in technology and the growing international interest in the Games. Each Olympic Games edition has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in sports broadcasting, setting new standards and milestones. 📈 Key milestones of Olympic Broadcasting include: 🔹Paris 1924 - the first Olympic Games to transmit live radio broadcasts 🔹Berlin 1936 - the first Olympic Games to be televised nationally (interestingly, only one of the three cameras available were capable of live coverage only when the ☀️ was shining) 🔹London 1948 - the BBC achieved a historic feat in making these Games the first to be televised globally 🔹Mexico City 1968 - the first Olympic Games to be broadcast live in colour 🔹2001 - the International Olympic Committee – IOC announces the creation of Olympic Broadcasting Services as the permanent Host Broadcaster of the Olympic Games 🛰️ For the #Paris2024 Olympic Games, OBS "will produce a record amount of content with more athlete-centric coverage and behind the-scenes material, while introducing new innovations that will take storytelling to a new level and redefine how viewers around the world experience the Games". These new innovations include: 🔹Ultra-High Definition (UDH) 🔹High Dynamic Range (HDR) 🔹5.1.4. immersive audio 🔹First Person View (FPV) drones 🎥 For a more extensive overview of the above, watch the latest episode of Africa Business of Sport Podcast featuring the CEO of Olympic Broadcasting Services, Yiannis Exarchos, on Spotify or listen on Apple Podcasts. _______________________ 👕: MIZIZI International Haiti Baseball Jersey (enter discount code "ABSP20" at checkout to get 20% off) ♻️ If you found this post useful, please reshare it with your network and follow me Jabu Mtwa for more Olympics #sportbiz content. #olympicbroadcasting #paris2024 #sportbiz

Discovery (WBD) and BT Group, will have the rights to broadcast all tournament games, except those scheduled for the traditional Saturday 3 pm slot. 💡 The FA Cup final must be broadcast on free-to-air (FTA) as it's a protected event under UK government regulations. 🙌🏼 The Football Association's decision to move most of the competition behind a paywall has sparked controversy, as the tournament has been free-to-watch in recent years. 💰 While the deal benefits TNT Sports financially and offers additional revenue streams for the FA, the move could diminish the FA Cup's long-term appeal by limiting FTA coverage. 👨🏻💻 The BBC's involvement provides extensive reach across linear, radio, and digital platforms, enhancing visibility for the limited selection of live matches. 🌟 The transition to a paywall model may affect the FA Cup's cultural significance and the resonance of underdog stories, which traditionally thrived under comprehensive FTA coverage. 🔔 The FA Cup's broadcasting shift reflects a balancing act between financial gain and maintaining the tournament's cultural relevance in the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting.
