The Palazzo archetype is typically a ten- to forty-thousand sq ft structure characterized by various small, medium, and large spaces in a relatively compact setting, often with a light or air court. It is a convenient model for civic, corporate, and institutional buildings, libraries, city halls, etc. Pg 189, The Art of Classic Planning #classicplanning #architecture #traditionalarchitecture #palazzo

The Alcazaba is a magnificent example of Moorish architecture and a palatial fortification in Málaga, Spain. It was constructed during the period of Muslim-ruled Al-Andalus to defend the city. The actual structure was built in the 11th century with some modifications up to the 14th century. As you explore the area, you'll notice architectural features that reveal the building's former purpose. Narrow slits through which arrows could be fired, a double set of walled enclosures, and defensive towers for spying and withstanding attacks were essential features. Two of the three protective walls remain, with over 100 towers across the entire site. It is one of the best-preserved alcazabas in Spain. It will make you feel like you are in old Al-Andalus! #Alcazaba #Málaga #spain #visitspain #history #architecture #alandalus

RICHARD H. DRIEHAUS ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 2020-2022 | Valpuesta, Berberana, Burgos was one of the three locations chosen for the 2020-2022 edition. The aim of this intervention is to recover a group of buildings located in the main public space of the town, between the Torre de los Velasco and the collegiate church of Santa María de Valpuesta. The latter is especially relevant, because some of the earliest evidences of the Spanish language were found there. For this reason, the restored ensemble will be transformed into a center for the study on the origins of Spanish. FIRST PRIZE: “La Casa Encendida” by Susana Granizo Polo and Silvia N. Gómez Díaz. From the proposal, the jury highlighted the treatment of the public spaces and the linkage between the project site and the neighbouring streets and plazas, along with the quality and distribution of interior spaces and the well-suited and integrated solution for increasing headroom in the top floor. RICHARD H. DRIEHAUS ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 2017-2018 | Jaca, Huesca was one of the four locations of the 2017-2018 edition. Jaca was chosen for proposing the creation of a singular public space in the heart of its historical centre that could contribute to its revitalization. The traditional architectural and urban design could thus be erected today as a tool of change that, withstanding, does not renounce the values that have made up the group in which it would be classed. In this case, we also took into account the historical and symbolic importance of the municipality, linked both to the origins of the Kingdom of Aragon and the Camino de Santiago, as well as its ability to demonstrate that a new traditional architecture can be equally valuable in intervening with more urban environments. FIRST PRIZE: “Pluribus Unum” by Abelardo Linares del Castillo Valero and Elena Jiménez Sánchez. Their design suggests a new civil area characterized by its life and diversity, compiling the architectural heritage which has defined the nature of the city. The project takes advantage of the fragmented disposal of the plots to generate diversity by means of different designs for each of the constructions included in the proposal, paying special attention to the facades opening towards the new square, bringing light to the open passages to connect the square to the surrounding streets and creating there new businesses and arcades. 02. Modern Heritage The Modern Heritage architectural style elevates traditional homes through sensitive restoration and bold renovation, with contrast as the defining element. Modern Heritage architecture uses the past to address the future needs of a home. By living in an older house, it forces us to truly consider how we want to live and how we want to personalise our homes. We've collaborated with builder and co-founder of BuildHer Collective, Rebeka Morgan who shared her insights on achieving the Modern Heritage style and tips to bring this vision to life. Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism Trophy - The motif based on bricks intends to portray the image of mountain/ water paths, which are natural characteristics of Seoul. Bricks are physically and visually associated with architecture. Laying bricks is viewed as an act of accomplishing something. The effort to discuss the future of cities and exchange ideas to find options at the SBAU is an attempt to continue to take steps forward. In that regard, the logo on the trophy contains the shapes of bricks to depict what the SBAU is about. Lines extracted from the SBAU's logo and skylines symbolizing a city were used in this logo. The skyline, which follows the heights of each factor (i.e., points, lines, and sides) in the logo, is cut from the top of the plaque to the back, indicating the identity of the SBAU and the theme of urban architecture.
