Our Senior Director of Grants Su-Yin Tan was a panellist at The Majurity Conversations 2024 today. Themed “Sussing Out Sustainability”, the event brought social impact leaders together to explore critical issues and possible next steps for organisations to thrive. On how funders can meaningfully support social organisations to help them become sustainable, Su-Yin explained that cultivating strong relationships based on trust will always be a priority. Social organisations know their work best. This is why having regular engagements and open conversations will enable funders like Tote Board to develop a good understanding on the needs and challenges faced on the ground, so we are better able to make informed funding decisions. These platforms will also enable funders to explain our governance requirements and our reasons for having them as a steward of public funds. Su-Yin emphasised that ultimately, Tote Board’s aim is always to empower our grant partners to realise their desire to do good, and to articulate the impact of their efforts. We will continue to help our grant partners succeed by developing impact measurement standards, playbooks and relevant toolkits that can be applied across the ecosystem. On understanding and trust. Ground-ups, charities and social enterprises play an important role in serving the community in Singapore. Funders want to support our social impact organisations – we cannot do the excellent work you do. However, both sides sometimes trip up because of a lack of understanding on how the other side works. Helpful ways social impact organisations and funders can work together include: - Engagement: Involving funders in key decisions, soliciting feedback and understanding our governance requirements. - Collaboration: Across the people, private and public sectors, the diversity of perspectives is invaluable as we try to solve complex social problems together. - Evaluation: The key to learning and improvement, the social ecosystem will be richer if we all share our learnings from impact evaluation, good and bad. Funders will ask for data, programme evaluation and the impact of our funding. We acknowledge that social impact organisations are busy with programming on the ground, but open and honest feedback to funders is key to building understanding and trust. Tote Board recognises that impact measurement is resource-intensive and can be expensive to outsource. We are working with sector leads and other stakeholders on the application of impact evaluation on the ground, to simplify and demystify impact measurement. Even as Tote Board implements our Impact Measurement Framework for our entire grants portfolio, we are committed to working with our grantee partners to do impact measurement as an incidental part of programming. We hope to do this eventually at low or no cost, through common impact measurement standards, toolkits and other resources. There is much more we can do together. Fascinating results from Edelman Trust Institute about the trends in trusting corporations over NGOs. I very much appreciated David M. Bersoff, Ph.D. About the importance for corporations to invite the expertise of their NGO partners into the room to support delivery of solutions. The more we can foster trust between us, the more we can implement quality interventions with equity and inclusivity and with the long term impact in mind.
