We at Green Tomato have been analysing supplier price increases as we (and many other greengrocers) are noticing huge rises. This is NOT our lovely suppliers who are doing their best to cushion the blow! We compared prices from July 2020 to July 2023 and overall, across all products our supplier costs have gone up by an average of 43%! We have seen some products costing an incredible 267% more! This is due to several factors including bad weather in Spain and North Africa, with fields of stock lost to frost in early 2023. Other factors include prices rises due to the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and a shortage of HGV drivers. This has inevitably influenced prices. Demand has increased and supply has decreased. Small businesses like Green Tomato are struggling to keep operating. One problem is that it is very difficult to compete with supermarkets. They sign contracts directly with farmers that are unfair and are causing concern for farmers. I have just signed this petition urging the government to reform the grocery supply code of practice to protect British farmers. The petition is organised by Riverford; you can read more here: https://lnkd.in/eBZfBkkf On a more positive note, we are as ever overwhelmed with the loyalty and support shown by our amazing community of customers. We are getting ready for a very busy week next week as we prepare all our Christmas orders. Sprout Stalks are in and Potatoes and Parsnips are flying out the door! Make sure you place your Christmas order in time for delivery on Friday 22nd December. #GetFairAboutFarming #smallbusinessowner #petition
