Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has indicated that Australia has seen the addition of 1.2GW of new large-scale solar projects brought online and connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) in the past 12 months. Detailed within its 2024 Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO) report, which provides a 10-year outlook of investment requirements to maintain reliability for the NEM, large-scale solar saw substantial growth, yet was trumped by the 3.9GW/13.5GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) that were brought online. Solar came up on top of the primary renewable energy generation technologies connected to the NEM, with consumers also investing heavily in larger rooftop solar PV systems. Second to solar PV was wind generation, with 0.2GW brought online, alongside 0.2GW of green hydrogen generation. The AEMO stated that delivering these new renewable energy generation capabilities, alongside the necessary energy storage to capture them, is critical to maintaining reliability for electricity consumers. Transmission upgrades have further enhanced this, granting further NEM capacity for connecting new projects.

New modelling suggests that changing the way we use Australia’s existing electricity sub-transmission and distribution grid could unlock 5 GW of additional rooftop solar, an extra 7 GW of front-of-meter generation, and 5 GW of additional distribution-connected battery energy storage by 2030. #Renewables #Australia #Solarenergy

Big news from down under! LDES Council member Energy Vault and ACEN Australia have announced a contractual agreement for two significant #battery energy storage system (BESS) deployments. Scheduled to begin construction later this year, Energy Vault will deploy both a 50 MW/100 MWh BESS and a 150 MW/300 MWh BESS at ACEN Australia’s New England Solar facility. The systems are targeted for commercial operations in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Backed by the New South Wales government’s Emerging Energy Program, Energy Vault’s #gravity and #kinetic energy based, long-duration energy storage solutions will deliver greater renewable energy sourced power to meet the region’s peak demand needs, reducing reliance on coal-fired generation.
