Vesak: Honoring Tradition and Teamwork At AB Mauri Lanka
AB Mauri Lanka's annual Vesak Lantern Competition, held on May 22, 2024, is a creative endeavor that unites employees from different departments. Teams of various departments collaborate to design and construct intricate Vesak lanterns (also known as Vesak Koodu), symbolizing the light of wisdom and Buddha's teachings. Employees from diverse backgrounds bring their creative perspectives and talents to the project.
The competition fosters stronger relationships, communication, and appreciation for each other's strengths, contributing to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
ABML’s Vesak events go beyond mere festivity; they serve as an opportunity to strengthen teamwork, enhance employee engagement, and integrate our passion for baking.
We organize various activities like this, not only to honor the cultural and religious significance of Vesak but also to foster a sense of community and belonging among employees.

What initially drew you to Stoli, and how has your journey been since joining the company?
I had the opportunity to work on STOLI and Elit over 15 years ago when the brands were already considered the benchmark for flavored vodkas and for defining the ultra-premium vodka category. Learning more about the relaunch of STOLI and the company’s expanded portfolio drew me back. My journey this past year has been fast paced and dynamic, offering new challenges and opportunities every day.
Can you share a memorable moment or project during your time at Stoli that stands out to you?
Recently, our first in person Americas Marketing team meeting was memorable. Getting to know each other and enjoying several meals together on a more informal basis allowed for a bonding opportunity, strengthening the overall camaraderie, and building trust: all important principles to driving collaboration and success of the team.
How would you describe the culture and work environment at Stoli?
Dynamic entrepreneurial spirit is how I would describe Stoli’s culture and environment. Through creativity, determination and passion, individuals can make impactful decisions daily to drive the business forward. We have a wonderfully talented and diverse group at Stoli. Together, we can achieve remarkable results.
In what ways has Stoli supported your professional development and growth?
After initially coming onboard as Regional Marketing Leader, I found myself in a unique position to transition into a leadership role which has given me more responsibility and exposure to the Executive Team. Developing the short and long term marketing strategy for our team has been a challenging and rewarding experience, allowing me the opportunity for both professional and personal growth.
How does Stoli foster a sense of community among its employees?
At Stoli, we are committed to working together, fostering a sense of belonging and cultivating an environment of trust. A recent team building experience reinforced this spirit where we respected different viewpoints and made sure everyone's voice was heard.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Stoli or entering a similar industry?
The wine & spirits industry is a highly rewarding and convivial environment. Have the desire to learn, meet as many people as possible and expose yourself to the various facets of the industry. Commit yourself and have fun.

DEI is like the Drake and Kendrick Lamar rap battle - It started off fun and energizing but became cringe and now everyone is kinda over it.
The term has lost much of its meaning and is often misguided. Either it falls victim to our polarizing nature, or it's used as a pawn for political agendas or corporate perception.
The underlying purpose still has value, though. The cake (the value of DEI) is still good. It's just that it's under a layer of icing (public perception and inconsistent implementation practices). Everyone, everywhere, has added a topping to the dessert, and too often, the taste is a jumbled hodgepodge of flavors that don't quite add up.
Whatever we call the next version of DEI, it must not only be done with marketing tact but also be matched with a more consistent, apolitical approach. It has to be welcoming, not accusing. It has to invoke curiosity, not minimize it.
A reset is necessary: in name, definition, conversation, and implementation. Whatever it is called, let's make it fun again.

Burgers, fries, and soda, the American version of German meat and potatoes with a drink, from the icon of American cultural globalization, the golden arch of Ray Kroc’s McDonald’s, gave the comeback kid from Hope, Arkansas, Bill Clinton, a triple bypass.
Taste and health cannot be more perfectly uncorrelated, -1, or are they perfectly correlated, 1, because what Clinton and Bill Gates consider taste is reality the lack of it?
This lack of taste is giving the planet a nona-bypass along all the nine planetary boundaries, as the Amazon burns to let the cows graze to feed the world’s growing appetite for their flesh along with economic growth and aspiration of the one human family to converge.
Gates wrote a book on climate. Invested in how to mitigate cows passing methane. But his addiction to money and cows remains, undermining both his book and investments.
The way to save humanity is not to make rounds of both Norway and Sub Saharan Africa, far far above and far far below the equator, the Great White North and the Great Black South, but walking the talk on global sustainability.
