As I prepare for my upcoming Digital Forensics class test, I’ve been amazed by the complexity hidden in something as unassuming as a hard disk drive (HDD)—a device that costs around 4000 rupees but packs a lot of technology and concepts which we have studied in our physics classes (I struggled with physics) during EMI lectures. Data Writing Process:- - HDDs use magnetic disks or platters(disk) coated with a magnetic material (ferromagnetic material, commonly iron oxide (older HDDs) or cobalt alloy (recent HDDs). Data is written using an actuator arm with a read/write head. - As the platter spins, the write head generates a magnetic field to alter the polarity of tiny magnetic regions on the disk’s surface. These changes represent binary data (0s and 1s). Magnetic Polarities:- - Each magnetic region on the disk can be magnetized in two directions: North or South, representing 0s and 1s, respectively. This magnetic polarity is what encodes the data. - The write head changes the direction of these magnetic fields to store data in a specific pattern. Data Storage:- - Data is stored in sectors and clusters. Each sector is a small, contiguous block on the disk where data is written. Files are broken into smaller pieces and distributed across these sectors. - When a file is saved, it’s divided into chunks, and these chunks are written sequentially or scattered across different sectors, depending on space availability. Data Retrieval:- - When retrieving data, the read head detects the magnetic fields on the spinning disk. It senses the orientation of the magnetic regions and converts these signals back into binary data (how? well, there's a controller embedded on the HDD for encoding/decoding and other tasks). - The data is then reassembled from its sectors and clusters to reconstruct the original file. - Even when data is deleted, remnants often remain on the disk, making it possible to recover information, a crucial aspect of digital forensics. Understanding this process highlights just how sophisticated even the simplest technology can be. When a firearm is fired💥, a cloud of vapour is ejected from the gun along with the bullet - this immediately cools to form inorganic particles which may land on the hands/face/body of the shooter or others nearby. Gunshot residue (GSR) analysis relies on identifying the chemical and morphological fingerprints of these particles. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry is the most common, standardised approach to comparing the elemental identities of those particles.
