A key feature of many of the great country economic miracles the past 100 years, when countries transformed from poor to wealthy developed nations, has been them expanding the power, equality and opportunities of women in their societies. This phenomenon can be observed in Western, Asian, Latin American and selected African societies. However, most African countries since independence appear to have done very little to expand the power, equality and opportunities of women. Not surprisingly, the consequence of this has been that African countries have lagged badly behind in development - and they will continue to stay stuck in poverty, unless they genuinely empower women in politics, economy and culture. Following the Second World War, left-of-centre Northern European social democratic and Labour parties, for example in Scandinavian countries, introduced greater women participation in social, political and economic spheres. To some extent the Second World War also played some role, when women had to take over the factories, mines and institutions at home, while men were at the war front. The expansion of education, opportunities and social power, dramatically lifted country development at all levels. The post-war elevation of the status of women brought new capacity, energy and dynamism to these societies. In conversation with Maseabi Marageni, Head of Business Development at Future Growth, on the #987Women edition of the PowerLunch programme of PowerFM on Women's Day. The talk was hosted by Ayanda Mafuleka, CEO of Fasset and Charmaine Houvet, from the International Women's Forum.

Today in our “How to…” series, we’re tackling a critical issue: How to Ensure Women’s Voices Are Heard in PPDs? Women are often missing from key discussions that shape their businesses, leading to solutions that don’t fully address their unique challenges. But we’re here to change that. 💡 Why it matters: When women are excluded from economic dialogues, the resulting policies and solutions fall short of driving truly inclusive growth. Our latest blog dives into how we’re breaking down these barriers to ensure women are not just participants but leaders in these conversations. 🔎 What you’ll learn: ▪ Why women are underrepresented in PPDs—and how to change it. ▪ Steps we’re taking to empower women’s organisations in Uganda, Kenya, and Benin: ➡ https://lnkd.in/eaKiC6yM https://lnkd.in/e54DiMj3 https://lnkd.in/eP8hAHpi ▪ Real success stories showing the transformative power of women’s voices in PPDs. Happy International day for rural women✨ Today, on International Day for Rural Women, we honor the incredible strength, leadership, and resilience of rural women who are transforming communities and driving change from the ground up. At Positive Life Kenya, we are privileged to work alongside these women—mothers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers—who are breaking barriers and building brighter futures for their families and beyond. Through our programs at Kiotani School and Faraja House, we’ve seen how empowered rural women turn challenges into opportunities. Whether through tailoring, cosmetology, or entrepreneurship training, they are becoming economic pillars and community leaders. These women are not just caretakers—they are trailblazers, creating sustainable solutions for food security, education, and economic growth. Rural women are at the heart of building resilient communities and advancing sustainable development. Today, we celebrate their indomitable spirit and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their journeys of empowerment. When rural women thrive, entire communities thrive. Let’s continue to amplify their voices, recognize their contributions, and invest in their potential to create lasting change. 💪🌍 #InternationalDayForRuralWomen #PositiveLifeKenya #EmpowerRuralWomen #WomenInLeadership #Resilience #SustainableDevelopment

🤔How is rural women entrepreneurship contributing to Cameroon’s SSE? Which dynamics define their engagement?🇨🇲 To know the answers read our booklet “Social and Solidarity Economy in Cameroon: The Development of the SSE Ecosystem and Needs Analysis of Women in Rural Areas”. 🔎This research has been brought on by #GREASEproject, which aims at fostering green social entrepreneurship in rural areas, ensuring #womenempowerment and sustainable inclusion in the labour market, and a fair and sustainable twin transition, specifically for what concerns Cameroonian VET providers and social economy enterprises. 🌿The second part of the publication is fully dedicated to the examination of the challenges faced by rural women entrepreneurs, identifying their needs for targeted education, training, and resources, in order to enhance their contributions within the SSE. The booklet is available in both English and French. How can women in DR CONGO benefit from this program?
It is my pleasure to announce that Cherie Blair Foundation for Women has today added another ground-breaking programme to its offer for women entrepreneurs! Road to Markets will empower women business owners by enhancing their access to markets through training and coaching. This is a vital initiative considering that across the world women entrepreneurs experience numerous, gendered barriers to markets that limit their businesses and their rightful economic empowerment. In fact, 59% of the women we surveyed reported needing better access to markets or procurement opportunities in order to address their business challenges. We will launch the programme shortly in Kenya, with our expert partners Smart Regional Consultants (SRC) and thanks to support from DHL Express. Having seen the enormous positive impacts our work in Kenya has enabled for over 20,000 women, I’m hugely excited to see this programme continue to boost women’s businesses in the country.
