Last week was truly epic! The Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA) came out in full force to support the successful delivery of the #GOGSFE 2024, hosted by GOGLA. In addition to reconnecting with our partners and members, we hosted 3 panel sessions that highlighted the importance of the entire Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) sector. I was particularly excited about our final panel: Innovations and Tools for Sustainable Rural Electrification, featuring an all-star lineup of some of the most dedicated professionals in the energy access space. Part 1 featured Nabin Raj Gaihre of VIDA and Susan Smith of Odyssey Energy Solutions who demonstrated technology solutions that make it easier for DRE companies, rural electrification agencies (REAs), and stakeholders to plan, operate, and manage large-scale site portfolios. Part 2 spotlighted Nigeria’s groundbreaking Nigerian Electrification Project (NEP), Africa’s largest and most successful energy access program. We heard from the CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, Abba Aliyu who shared critical success factors such as strong political support, collaboration, and innovative approaches. Anita Otubu, former NEP lead and now Senior Director at UEF (Universal Energy Facility) also shared how UEF has adapted aspects of the NEP, along with some challenges faced thus far. Soraya A., Director at ANSER RDC presented the DRC’s rural electrification framework, pledging to work closely with REA Nigeria, et al. William Brent of Husk Power applauded the work of Nigeria and DRC’s REAs, emphasizing the need for pragmatism and flexibility to achieve SDG7. Indranil Roy of Okra Solar brought fresh insights on partnerships and innovation, highlighting how meshgrids are positioning themselves within the energy access value chain, while stressing the importance of long-term sustainability over short-term gains. Naomi Wagura of The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) highlighted the urgent need to bridge the gap between committed and deployed funds, while Stephen Kansuk, PhD. underscored the critical role of governments in creating an enabling environment for both interconnected and isolated DREs. Key takeaways from the session, especially when panelists shared their frustrations, were: 1. Collaboration is non-negotiable; silos need to go. 2. Capital deployment must speed up—development finance and philanthropic organizations need to do more. 3. DRE companies require more funding and support to scale and achieve sustainability. 4. True, bold leadership is essential if we are to meet SDG7. A big thanks to the GOGLA team, led by Sarah Malm and supported by Patrick Tonui, Claire Nelson, and Susie Wheeldon for showing how our two industry associations can work together seamlessly. I thank the panelists for bringing honest and insightful perspectives, and my teammates for your passion and dedication! PS: I think we may have broken a record for largest panel ever! 😆
