Many people in Odisha often think of ragi (mandia) as the only millet, despite the fact that there are eleven different types of millets available in India. This perception likely stems from cultural and historical reasons. Ragi has been a staple in the region for generations, deeply ingrained in the local diet and traditional farming practices. Its nutritional benefits and adaptability to the local climate have further cemented its prominence. However, it's essential to broaden this understanding and recognize the diverse array of millets, each offering unique health benefits and culinary possibilities, contributing to a more varied and nutritious diet. The eleven types of millets available in India are: 1. Ragi (Finger Millet- Mandia) 2. Jowar (Sorghum) 3. Bajra (Pearl Millet) 4. Foxtail Millet 5. Kodo Millet 6. Little Millet 7. Barnyard Millet 8. Proso Millet 9. Brown Top Millet 10. Fonio Millet 11. Amaranth Millet Each of these millets has its own unique advantages and can play a crucial role in promoting food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. How can we better educate and promote the consumption of these diverse millets in our communities?

Millets making a comeback in Odisha! 🇮🇳 Odisha's innovative Millet Mission is bringing these nutritious grains back to farms and plates. How? -Supporting farmers with good practices & minimum support price. -Promoting millet consumption in urban & rural areas. -Encouraging local processing & entrepreneurship. Success Story: -Launched in 2017, the program has expanded 30 blocks across seven districts, the initiative roped in self-help groups, and non-governmental organisations like Revitalising Rainfed Agriculture Network, WASSAN India, and many more. -Increased millet production & farmer income. -Promoted a healthy millet food culture. Looking ahead: -Odisha is investing heavily to make millets a major crop, boosting farmer livelihoods and healthy eating! “The Mission is supported by a multilevel, hybrid programme management unit (comprising research Institutions, policy advocacy networks, non-government and government organisations) embedded in an inter-departmental government machinery. While the Programme Secretariat is managed by Watershed Support Services and Activities Network WASSAN India, the Research Secretariat is managed by the Nabakrushna Chowdhary Centre for Development Studies." A big Thanks to Odisha Govt for taking initiative to promote millet farming in state and boosting famer's income. #Millets #Odisha #Agriculture #HealthyFood #Mission

“Kisan to khush-haal hai hi nahin. Kisan se aaj kal koi shaadi nahin karna chahta.” - Farmer from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh In recent years, the agrarian crisis has entered public consciousness, driven by a wave of farmers’ protests and movements. The deep impact of this crisis was evident in the issues raised by farmers at our Rural Agenda convenings. They spoke about rising #costs and stagnant #incomes, and the decline of agriculture as a respectable profession. Farmers also knew where the system was failing them: the lack of #storage infrastructure kept crop #prices low while poor #road connectivity made #markets difficult to access and kept transport costs high. The lack of #support prices for many crops, including Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP), left small farmers without any safety net. You can hear more in the video below. . . . . Rural Voice and Socratus Foundation for Collective Wisdom have organized a series of discussions on ‘Agenda for Rural India’. A first of its kind #nationwide exercise, this series aimed to construct a comprehensive #ruralagenda based on the challenges and aspirations of #rural citizens. These gatherings involved over 300 participants from 60 districts of Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Meghalaya, including farmers, artisans, entrepreneurs, women’s SHGs, migrants and youth. The insights gathered were shared with leading policymakers and experts on November 1, 2023, in New Delhi.

National Kisan Diwas honours those who keep our plates filled. India’s agricultural legacy is deeply rooted, and one of the significant contributors behind its thriving harvests are rural women. Sabita, a farmer from Bihar, embarked on this journey alongside her husband, striving for more for her family. Sabita is not only a diligent worker, but she is also astute; through planning, she ensures that her crops receive optimal conditions throughout the year for a successful harvest. Another example of her strategic thinking was her use of a microloan to invest in more high-quality organic fertilisers, equipment, and resources in order to maximise her capitals. Sabita nurtures growth and cultivates change with every furrow, plant, and seed. Svamaan is proud to have played a role in her story, along with the other rural women who are transforming the agricultural landscape of India. Culture led transformative action| Public Spaces | Praxis: Practice led research and research informed practice| Policy Operationalisation| Data Storytelling |
Our lives are complex systems at the intersection of the past and present; with layered patterns , some of which we inherit, some we create and some are created around us. #culture is a wonderful way to understand these patterns, and becomes the pivotal piece in any #systemschange. A good example is this piece of writing on the ‘millet revival’: that speaks of the complex but oft ignored dimensions of policy operationalisation: people’s aspirations that stem from complex socio-cultural realities. To quote : “many schemes to alleviate poverty and malnutrition have fallen short because they have neglected systemic issues such as caste discrimination and historical inequities.Further, most millet enterprises are focused on the urban market, which is a risky strategy as urban consumers lack the cultural connection with millets of their rural counterparts” A nuanced and well written piece by Sudha Nagavarapu that I have found extremely insightful and am extremely happy to recommend. #storiesthatmatter
In their village on the banks of the Sarayan river in central Uttar Pradesh, an elderly woman and her husband conserved a unique variety of kodo millet. They continued cultivating and harvesting this grain, even though other villagers considered them eccentric for following ‘outdated’ practices. Sudha Nagavarapu, Researcher and Activist met this couple, who handed over their kodo millet seeds and rice, which the woman had hand-pounded with Sudha. Catch this fascinating piece by Sudha, in collaboration with Native Picture and the Food and Land Use Coalition - FOLU India, of which WRI India is the secretariat, on 'Millets in India’s Past and Future: Women’s tales from the grassroots' which explores grassroots stories of millet women cultivating millets: https://lnkd.in/dcRhWAVa #millets #indiamillets #millet #womeninagriculture #superfood #superfoods Dr. Jayahari KM Shweta P.
