*HEALTH OF EVERYCHILD MATTERS* Since 2015, February 10th has been observed as National Deworming Day. The objective of this day is to deworm all pre-school and school age children (enrolled and non-enrolled) between the ages of 1-19 years through the platform of schools and Anganwadi centres in order to improve overall health, nutritional status, access to education and quality of life. Intestinal worms (soil- transmitted helminths (STH) are parasites that live in the human intestines and consume the nutrients and vitamins that a child consumes. It further leads to diarrhoea; dysentery; loss of appetite; reduced nutritional intake and physical fitness; increased malabsorption – a condition that prevents absorption of nutrients through the small intestine. In India, over 22 crore children under 14 years of age are at risk of STH infections Surveys conducted by the Health Ministry across 14 states during 2020 revealed that due to regular deworming rounds, there is reduction in % of cases across states. States like Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar have shown considerable reduction in worm prevalence. While the efforts of the government certainly need to be applauded, the stakeholders at the community-be it school staff or Anganwadi workers have done commendable work. While the road and direction are clear, we have covered a considerable portion, there is still a road to be covered ahead. During a recent field visit to #Bastar, #Chhattisgarh, as part of my role as a District #Nutrition Consultant, I had a profound interaction that highlighted the power of #communication beyond words. While discussing anemia with an Anganwadi helper, I asked her if she knew what "khoon ki kami" (#Anemia) meant. Despite our language barrier, we both earnestly tried to bridge the gap. When she struggled to explain the concept verbally, she did #SomethingRemarkable. Dressed in a vibrant saree adorned with Red, Green, Yellow, and Off-White colors, she used these hues to communicate. Pointing to the Red, she indicated Healthy Blood. Green and Yellow suggested Health and Vitality, while the Off-White symbolized #Iron Deficiency. In that moment, I was struck by her Ingenuity and the effectiveness of her non-technical, visual explanation. This experience reinforced the importance of Empathy and Creativity in #HealthEducation and #HealthCommunication, reminding me that sometimes, the simplest methods are the most powerful. It also underscored the value of the #ParticipatoryResearch approach in understanding and addressing community health issues. Let’s appreciate and learn from these #UnsungHeroes who find innovative ways to communicate critical #HealthInformation. A #training #session was conducted for #ASHAs at the #Kalyanpur #Health and Wellness Center in Bariyarpur, under the jurisdiction of #Munger #district #Bihar, #focusing on Kala-azar. The #session #emphasized the #symptoms of #Visceral #Leishmaniasis (VL) and Post-Kala-azar #Dermal #Leishmaniasis (PKDL). ASHAs were #educated on identifying potential Kala-azar patients and the #importance of timely referrals to hospitals for testing. The training also provided #detailed #information about #financial #support available for Kala-azar #patients and the incentives for ASHAs. #Attendees included ASHAs, facilitators, and #representatives from the (MI) team, all contributing to a better understanding of # vector-borne #diseases. This initiative aims to enhance the early detection and management of Kala-azar, ultimately #leading to improved health outcomes in affected communities. Through this comprehensive approach, frontline health workers are #empowered to #effectively tackle this public health challenge. #publichealth

We see unbelievable forms of cooperation among individuals. This amazing group of women is an example - they may be poor in terms of access to material resources, but their social and human capital is their real asset. Challenge is, how do we create policies that provide space for these capitals to grow for development synergy at scale and not as islands of success? Way back in 1980s, a group of dedicated villages of Palamu - one of Our India’s poorest, drought-prone districts created a Chakriya Vikas Pranali (Cyclic Sysyem of Development) to use degraded lands, abandoned by land owners as such due to naxal conflicts, in a 3-tier system of agroforestry. Results were amazing - treated lands returned massive incomes which was divided between landless labourers who cultivated the field, the absentee land owners, the village society and the people’s committee in a 30:30:30:10 ratio. That was nothing short of a social-political-economic revolution! Neotia, a landless Dalit woman in her 50s now easily stood to others and ensured that her voice is heard by all. Convinced, Government of Bihar launched Joint Forest Management in 1989 on the same benefit sharing formula. Millions of hectares of forest regenerated. (Contd.)

24/02/2024 It's been a year since I have taken additional charge as the Child Development Project Officer of the Jawadhu hills block, Tiruvannamalai. Jawadhu hills being one of the aspirational blocks among 500 other blocks in India, special focus on various indicators are emphasized. On the nutrition aspect we are looking at the following indicators, 1. The distribution of supplementary nutrition to pregnant mothers/lactating mothers/ and children between the age groups of 6 months to 6 years 2. The percentage of SAM and MAM children 3. The measuring efficiency of the children by the anganwadi workers 4. The availability of functioning water facility and toilet facilities inside the anganwadi centre In view of these indicators, we were back at the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND PANCHAYATI RAJ, Hyderabad, with Child Development Project officers and Aspirational Block Fellows from the states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. From meeting officers and fellows from different states, to discussing the various challenges and the ways to overcome those, in order to achieve the state average on the above indicators, Phewwww...! After that went to Nanak Sagar where I filled the Anganwadi Assistant Supervision Checklist. Sam child will go to NRC tomorrow with whom we talked yesterday. We visit 2 pregnant women, 3 lactating women and 3 home visits to fill out diet sheets on site. 2 Lactating women have not consumed IFA tablets and have low HB. Symptoms of HB and sickle in pregnant woman are less and 1 pregnant woman has not consumed IFA tablets and does not know where to get it. We ask questions about their diet and provide advice on medications and nutrition. The height of pregnant women is not mentioned on the MCP card.
