Understanding and leveraging each team member's unique strengths is crucial for maximizing our collective potential. I've often encountered situations where differing work styles led to frustration, but recognizing these as individual strengths has been transformative. For example, I've seen how silent thinkers contribute profound insights when given the space, or how detail-oriented colleagues ensure thorough project planning. Taking the time to identify and appreciate these diverse strengths has improved our communication, collaboration, and overall efficiency. By focusing on what each person naturally excels at, we create a more cohesive and innovative team environment. I recently took part in a workshop on working in a team. We looked at the different roles people have in teams based on their behaviour (not personality) - specifically using Belbin's 9 Team Roles: https://lnkd.in/ephcBKhT It really reminded me of how easy it can be to forget that everybody's different. Even if you are on the same team, doing the same job, with potentially the same career goals, you may be worlds apart on how you approach work. This can lead to clashes and resentment. Or, if you take into consideration the positive aspects to each different work approach, it could lead to appreciation and improved collaboration and communication. I find this invaluable, so thought I'd share it.

🤔 Here’s something important I’ve learned about people: We all have an innate need to feel connected and belong. It’s built into our DNA. That’s why we start to disengage when we feel disconnected from our colleagues or our organisation. To thrive, we need connection. Without it, we might: 👉 Resist change. 👉 Put in minimal effort. 👉 Blame others for problems. 👉 Develop a negative attitude. 👉 Withdraw and be reluctant to share ideas. Yet connection in the workplace can be tricky... We’re not often taught how to manage conflict, resolve disagreements, or navigate differences. So when relationships get uncomfortable, we feel unsafe and disconnect. To build meaningful relationships, we need space for safety and trust to grow. Teams who intentionally spend time together, to understand what makes each other tick, are better equipped to pull together when challenged. This is where regular team development can make a big difference.
