Six weeks ago, everything clicked into place. Two threads that I mentally filed away in totally different places suddenly became one idea. And it has consumed most of my free time since. *The first thread*: Over the past 18 months, the most energizing and fulfilling part of my work life has been mentoring Chloe Seckman and Grace Wilking. This pair of rockstars-in-the-making have been so eager to learn #socialmedia marketing that they reminded me how much I love to teach. Not teach in a formal setting, but organize my thoughts and share my discoveries in a way that can help them avoid the same mistakes I made and gain traction sooner. After all, as a manager, their success is my success. *The second thread*: A recent career change that revealed to me how many other young professional marketers are put in the same sink-or-swim situation that I overcame... Minimal onboarding. Competing voices saying different things. High visibility and expectations for entry-level-ish positions. And frankly, at least in my case, an inadequate skillset to navigate the situation in those early years. *Tying them together*: Six weeks ago, I realized that there are a lot of young professional marketers who can benefit from the stories, lessons, templates, and "Jon-isms" that I've developed over the last eight years. After a brief time in the entertainment industry, I've embarked on an exciting new journey in digital marketing. Reflecting on my career journey, there was a time when I underestimated the value of my marketing degree and the role my university experience played in my journey. Early on, the real-world skills seemed more tangible through my experience in agencies and through Google + YouTube University. Yet, as my career progressed from junior roles to senior management, I've come to realize the strong foundation my formal education actually provided. Today, I seamlessly integrate classic concepts like the 4 P's (Product,Price,Place, and Promotion) of Marketing, SWOT (Strengths,Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threat) analysis, and even intricate PESTLE -(Political,Economic,Social,Legal, and Environmental) analysis into strategic planning with clients. These tools along with my real world experience have helped me grasp macro trends and their impacts on micro environments, guiding better decision-making with clients. I'm also reminded of invaluable advice from my professors: diversify information sources, leverage your social networks, and always be the first to embrace new opportunities, no matter how challenging they seem. These lessons have not only accelerated my career growth, but enriched my understanding of signals for growth and to keep in mind growing pains are temporary and lead to long term growth. Overall this reflection on my university experience and marketing degree value has led me to see I was equipped with more of a foundation than I thought, and was complemented by my continuous learning in the workplace and through industry conferences, resources shared by Moz, SMX, Search Engine Land, and HubSpot and my incredible work + Linkedin community. It's a blend that has kept the big picture in focus and steered me clear of short-term shortcuts. 🌎Earlier in the day, I was interacting with an MBA student who has a specific interest in marketing. He was excitedly sharing how he's learning different marketing tools and hacks to prepare for his upcoming career journey. While it's good to learn different tools and hacks, which are extremely important in the age of technology. But I believe and suggested him. ✅You become a marketer if you focus on understanding people and their behavioral psychology. All these tools and hacks are valuable but secondary. Once we understand how people behave and make decisions, we become more effective marketers. The year was 2021, and I secured a position in Digital Marketing at LinkedIn despite not having a background in Marketing. Seeing the world come to a standstill within weeks due to Covid was a real wake-up call for me. Even though I had tons of experience, most of it was in tourism and travel. It hit me that once things got better, I needed to switch gears and find a career path that wasn't tied to just one industry, so I could grow and evolve. Sure, I didn't have a Marketing background, but fortunately, Jack O Connell was looking for more than just marketing skills. To this day, I remain grateful for the recognition of my honesty, sales background, passion for team bonding, dedication to leadership, and eagerness to learn, which enabled me to become a part of the LMS Support team. While it was definitely more challenging for me to grasp certain concepts compared to my colleagues with degrees in digital marketing or similar roles, I found that with dedication, technical concepts can be learned on the go and I can still be a top performer. I know it was the right call at the time, and three years later, I'm still learning every day—not only in Marketing, but in: Leadership 💼 Project Management 📊 Stakeholder Collaboration 🤝 Networking 🌐 Giving Feedback 🗣️ Team Bonding 🤗 Strategy 📈 ... and so much more. 💹 Reflecting on this journey, I realize that stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges has been incredibly rewarding.
