Sales Wisdom # 29
Every Tango walk begins with a step back. It's interesting to think that in football, most offensive plays start with snapping the ball back. I once read, "Life seems more like dancing" than walking or running, as sometimes you move sideways, backward, spin around, and move forward.
Selling is similar. Once you make that first cold phone call or send out that key approach email, you are more likely dancing. I think you need to listen very well to the music to keep up with the rhythm and the melody flow. Selling is a people thing; you should treat it as an art because it is a person-to-person action. We solve personal problems, improve their current status, and often save them from another problem they fall into because of an unfortunate miss accomplishing commitment with another salesperson.
We may begin as Tango dancers, stepping back short and smoothly to ensure our message is understood and giving space for us to read their reaction and follow to the next step, then accompanying our dance partner, literally walking together in the business venture. In football, we hand back the ball so the QB, with a perspective of how the team is performing the called play, may follow the plan or make adjustments if necessary over the field or the dancing floor.
So, yes, I think selling is an art, just like dancing and football.
Happy weekend!
