What's 5%❓ We've joined fellow independent festivals asking the UK government to lower VAT on festival ticket sales from 20% to 5% for a temporary period of three years. Why❓ One in six festivals didn’t survive the global pandemic and we are still seeing more and more of the UK's best independent events close their gates. If you've been a friend of Elderflower Fields for a while, you'll know it's been a challenge. The independent festivals that survived did so by using up all our reserves. Your trust and support in buying tickets early and donating your time and creativity to encourage more families outdoors kept us going. Temporarily lowering VAT on ticket sales for the next three years would give surviving festivals including Elderflower Fields and Into The Trees in September the space to breathe. How can you support us and the Association of Independent Festivals❓ https://lnkd.in/ebQ87_Mf And, continue to buy tickets to independent events as early as you can ❤

If you are a Seattle arts organization using ticketmaster, it is well past time you move to one of many alternatives. If you're a non-profit organization with words such as diversity, equity, and access in your mission statement, vision statement, and on your website, it is well past time you stop using ticketmaster. It is beyond time you start living your mission and your stated values. Stop using ticketmaster. https://lnkd.in/gQSggEkg

That message didn’t land well. Recently, I’ve been to a lovely film festival that had a problem. Their public funding had been cut significantly and now they are in financial trouble. Which made them a bit angry. Mostly towards the public bodies. But they also had a little difficulty keeping their calm towards the crowd. In their pre-show moderation they insisted that it was our obligation as visitors of the festival to donate to cover the missing funds. That message didn’t land well. No-one felt obliged, although everyone seemed to enjoy the festival and I’m pretty certain many of them would actually be happy to donate at least a small amount. But. People just didn’t feel that the festival was *entitled* to their money. Communication-wise I think the problem was that they were speaking entirely from their own perspective: “We need money. Someone needs to give it to us. That someone is you.” Essentially, they’ve tried to turn *their* problem into *our* problem when they should have tried to turn our *joy* into their *solution*. People are happy to pay for joy. Not so much out of a false feeling of guilt. The organiser’s anger kept them from seeing that there’s almost no limit in getting people’s support when supporting you gets people what *they* want. The audience wants a lovely film festival. The thing they want least is to be bothered with politics and business models. What makes *your* customers happy to pay? The more conversations you have with your audience and the better you listen during these conversation, the better you understand what makes them feel happy. Resonate with that! PS: This afternoon, I’ll host a live conversation with Julian Treasure on “How to listen well”. I would love to meet you there: https://lnkd.in/ezkyxG3b

Events management courses introduce students to planning and managing events, with events delivered as experiential learning opportunities during courses. Here is an example from our member, University of Chester Business School, where funds were also raised for charity. #events #management #education #students #experience #experientiallearning

There's been a lot of unfortunate misinformation going around about festival donations, so some of the Chicago chambers of commerce got together to clear the air. So the question is, where do those donations REALLY go? Spoiler alert, it’s NOT the city! Q: Who puts on a street festival? We do! Organizations like your local chambers of commerce! Q: What is a chamber of commerce? People are surprised to learn that a chamber of commerce isn’t a government organization. We’re actually nonprofits run by small teams, our whole purpose is to support our neighborhoods, uplift our businesses, provide services for our residents, and entertainment for everyone. Q: Ok, so where does the money go?! A festival is more than just a party, it’s a fundraiser. We apply for non-profit grants, but these festivals, besides being an absolute blast, are also our biggest fundraiser. Think of it like our annual gala but with a super casual dress code and better music. All our events, neighborhood clean up, resources for business owners like masterclasses and trainings, and non-profit benefits all rely on your donations. Q: But it’s free public property right? You’re right! It is public property, and whether you donate or not, we welcome you in to enjoy the festivities, but closing down the streets and paying for entertainment is expensive! Q: It’s fine if I don’t donate though cause someone else will right? Again, we welcome you in, but as of 2023, we’ve found that less than 50% of festival attendees donate. Q: So what now? We’re not gonna lie, planning these festivals is a huge and difficult endeavor, but we can also genuinely say that we love it. Despite all the hurdles; discovering a new artisan, seeing faces light up during drag queen story times, or that first great bite of that Chicago dog makes it all worth it.
