Domestic violence is not just physical. It can be verbal, emotional, sexual, and financial. This type of abuse can happen to anyone. Many people who experience domestic violence don't even realize that they are in an abusive relationship until it's too late. Domestic abuse affects people of all ages, however there are key differences in how it affects older people that are important to recognise. 🟣 For older victims, family members rather than intimate partners are most often the perpetrators of domestic abuse. 🟣 For many older victims, abuse may become normalised and accepted, which can create barriers to getting help and support. 🟣 Older victims may experience a decline in physical and cognitive health and become dependent on their abuser for support. 🟣 Older women often feel expected to protect the family unit by staying with the abuser, and may fear losing relationships with adult children, family, and friends. 🟣 In some cases older victims may also provide a caring role for their abuser which also impacts on their willingness to leave an abusive relationship. Being aware of these key differences is a huge step in recognising that the abuse of older people often requires specialised support services. We provide a 24/7 helpline service for older victim-survivors over the age of 60 and anyone concerned. October is Domestic Violence (D.V.) Awareness Month in the United States - and we want to take the opportunity to shine light on this important issue, as it affects countless lives in our communities as well. D.V. can take many forms - physical, emotional, financial, and more.  But it shares one common thread: the power and control exerted by one person over another in an intimate relationship. At Safe Transitions, our mission is to provide a lifeline for those seeking refuge from D.V , offering comprehensive support to help them break free from the cycle of abuse and build a brighter future. We encourage you to reflect on this month and to be an advocate for change, here are a few suggestions: Educate Yourself: Learn about the signs of D.V.  and the resources available for survivors in your community. Raise Awareness: Use your voice and your platform to spread the message about this important issue. Support Survivors: If you or someone you know is experiencing D.V. please let this be your sign to seek help. You can offer support, a safe space, and information about local resources. Donate: Consider supporting organizations that work tirelessly to assist survivors and raise awareness. Every contribution helps.
