**NEW REPORT** The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) serves on the Grantmakers in the Arts board and is introducing this report that is the culmination of more than 18 months of dialogue with Indigenous artists, elders, culture bearers, tribal liaisons, leaders of Native organizations, and individuals working inside the tribal relations offices of U.S. state and federal government agencies. All artists face challenges, but Indigenous artists face extra hurdles from the effects of fraud and cultural appropriation. Support to Native organizations and artists represents only about 0.4% of state arts agency grant funding, and many tribes are not aware that state arts agencies even exist. Ki a au nei (IMO) the arts strategy should focus on sector sustainability and job creation so that our best artists stay in the game. Many of the artists I went to high school with (even Toi whakaari) gave up on the scene long ago due to the inconsistency of mahi. To maintain the high quality artist, producers and arts business leaders also need to be developed. I have worked on both sides of the camera, on and off the stage, and I have found many artists struggle with the business side of the world. They need more support from those who have dexterity - meaning, those who have a deep understanding (and appreciation) of the artistic process and who are also strong in business. Doubling the creative sector contribution to the GDP is a weird KPI. You’ve gotta spend money to make money. You want those types of outcomes? Invest. Invest in the development and sustainability of the sector. Stop allowing people to come in, shoot their juggernauts, hire our crew but leave out the cast, producers, writers and in some cases directors from the jobs that will help develop our sector. Arts is an essential service. Ki a au nei (IMO)
