Everyone has an opinion. Most are not voiced, most sit in your head and either fade into the past or sit and fester. I have one in my head right now, it wont leave though and as I ruminate, I know that only voicing it will bring relief. Only by saying it without fear of being cancelled, of being 'trolled', of being thought of as troubled will I gain back some inner peace, so lets try it shall we? I see posted here, week in week out, the efforts of many good people, raising money for charities, helping those who are not so fortunate or providing a free service locally, but why are they having to do it? Why are so many needed? That's my thought, that's my opinion, so let me elaborate. Our governments and councils can always find money for the fashion projects, the road closures, the bus lanes, the cycle lanes, the pedestrian areas, the purchase of redundant buildings because they are 'historic', the PC directives, the list goes on. The office of the Yorkshire mayor recently awarded Sheffield £21million for one of these fashion projects, why? Why not finance the Archer project, why not help the Children's Hospital charity, why not give some to Bluebell Wood children's hospice or a hundred other good causes? Locally we have a shortage of mental health provision, like most of the country we are desperately short of council houses, services are at breaking point. If we have £21m available to spend locally on the concrete, bricks and flagstones, pet projects, I ask why? Why? Why? Why? Why did planting a few trees in the Don Valley become more important than rough sleeping in our town centres, why is it more important to buy a derelict building than build affordable housing, why do we need to replace one roundabout for another, why do we need to put thriving businesses out of business by making access difficult, and finally why are those responsible still doing it?

Any charity, right now, could start planning a major appeal which would raise a lot of money and transform your core fundraising. It doesn’t require any sort of ‘capital expenditure’.  What is required is an organising idea. The NSPCC’s Centenary Appeal was a record at its time, and the single organising idea was simply that we were 100 years old.  Nothing more. Why would any-one give because we were 100 years old?  But they did.  In record numbers. A fluke?  Our 200 Branches were independent ‘Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children’ until 1953.  A great many organised their own Centenary Appeals to mark their own founding.  They were very successful. Yes, if you have a need for capital organise a capital appeal.  Rebuilding the church spire is a powerful reason for local people to give. But, if you don’t, focus on the most powerful organising idea that you can.  At least consider a major appeal.

Of course we are a Museum of Firefighting & love sharing our history in the most interactive & educational way possible, but! Our museum is the method for us to raise as much money as possible to provide help to 999 workers suffering from mental illness. We want you to always keep this in mind as it is the whole reason we came to exist. Think of us as a charitable organisation with the objective of preventing as much as possible the progression to suicidal thoughts and as a safety net when mental illness is career ending. Loss of career or death by suicide will affect the families of 999 workers for generations such as grief, poverty & crippling debt. This is not right & cannot be allowed We can’t do this alone ! They have an advocate that’s trying to secure an extra month (or two) in their current place, but it’s unknown whether that will happen. As of right now, NOV. 30TH IS THEIR LAST DAY WITH A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS. They are still around $800 SHORT of the needed amount to get into an apartment. But even if they are forced out of their home in around 24 hours, the next month will make all the difference on whether they can find a new place before winter sets in. Is there scope for a second fund ?

Wills Month - you will have started seeing all the posts/advertising from charities about Wills month and for good reason. The large international charities get 80% of their income from Bequests and in NZ that equates to around $200 million going out in bequests every year! I am on a mission to help small charities and community groups such as sports clubs, churches, schools and service groups to understand the importance of offering an ethical and donor centered Bequest programme as a donating solution to their supporters. With grants funding getting harder to get and government funding drying up rapidly, groups need to look at better ways to fund the programmes their groups do that make such a positive difference in our communities. I believe the real change in society happens at a grassroots level - this is why ensuring they have funding and supporter connection is so important to me. To help people plan for the later stages I give the organisations I work with a free 32 page resource to help their people and I am offering it free this month to ANYONE who needs to get sorted - or have parents who need to get sorted. I am delighted to share that CooperVision and CooperVoice – Employee Forum have completed a two-year partnership and fundraising effort for Southampton Hospitals Charity – Southampton Children Hospital. With ALL our colleagues' generous support from Delta Park, MountPark, and Brunel Way, we raised an impressive £30,000 throughout many the series of events.   The team's dedication to making a difference in the lives of children and their families was recently celebrated in a discreet manner. Representatives from CooperVoice and the Distribution & Packaging Senior Managers Andrew Hinton and Gary Lonsdale presented the cheque to Beth Head of Charity Operations.   This success is a testament to the power of collective action to create positive change and inspire others to join in the spirit of giving.
