First they defunded the volunteer centre. Then they defunded councils for voluntary services. Then they defunded welfare rights, advocacy and advice charities and local community centres. Then councils and governments started defunding lots of charities and we don't have the networks or voices locally to oppose it. So charities carry on with their reserves hoping for something to come along and quietly fade into the night. I know very little about Norfolk and nothing about this carers charity but thousands of people at a time are losing their support networks every time the delayed impact of austerity bites. This is happening in slow motion and charity leaders are trying our best to buck the trend and deliver innovative solutions. Britain is losing one of the most amazing things about it as a country, a vibrant #vcse that speaks up for the needy and keeps the social fabric of the UK intact. How many essential service providers like this will go in March? It's the inevitable result of massive cuts to council budgets. #charity #councilfunding #austerity #charities Also as a side note, the BBC coverage while welcome is incredibly glib by labelling this a "cost of giving" crisis, when it's clear in the text the local council pulled it's core budget and that's the main reason for this.

At a time when the UK’s housing is in crisis with local Councils across the country declaring a housing emergency, the Scottish Government announce a £200 million cut to the housing budget. It makes you wonder how Scottish Government’s target of building 110,000 affordable homes by 2032 will be met. How will this choice, made by Scottish Government, impact on the poorest and most vulnerable in our society? People are living in temporary accommodation for far longer and are unable to afford to get onto the property ladder. The consequences to charities providing services within housing will be huge. Many charities are already struggling through the cost of living crisis.

Incredibly sad to hear another fantastic local charity is closing, this time Age UK West Cumbria. One of the new government’s first jobs must be to free up funds for local authorities and to open grant schemes for VCFSE organisations. Charitable donations across the U.K. are down around 30%, with charities facing the same budgetary pressures as other businesses - energy prices, increased to the minimum wage etc. At the same time volunteer numbers are also down as the older generation retire and younger generation are unable to replace them due to their own pressures with longer working hours. Yes there are cases of mismanagement, but these are few and far between - the problem is sector wide and is in urgent need of external intervention, otherwise we face more service closures, more charities going bust, and a move away from person-centred and geographic care. #cumbria #charity #donations #fundraising #vcfse #generalelection

Today is Stop the Bleed Day! In the UK alone, there are more than 250 fatal stabbings each year. Raising awareness, providing first aid training, and ensuring access to life-saving Stop the Bleed kits are our primary focuses. Throughout the year, we have been donating these vital kits to local businesses, sports clubs, and other establishments. We are committed to continuing our donations throughout 2024 and will endeavor to raise awareness about the importance of first aid training. Together, we can make a difference and save lives. Working with the health & care sector for a number of years has opened my eyes to the amazing job the people that look after our most vulnerable in society do. It is why 20 of us from Howden Health & Care will be walking 34km of the Jurassic Coast to raise awareness and much needed funds for two great charities… The Care Workers' Charity support the almost 2 million care workers in the UK, contributing to one of the largest workforces. They care for some of the most vulnerable people in our society with little recognition and often no reward. Care workers face challenges every day such as loss of income, inconsistent hours, consequences of low recruitment and retention and lack adequate resources to help care workers do their job to the best of their ability. Ickle Pickles are the smallest and sickest babies who need intensive care in neonatal units. There are over 90,000 babies born sick or prematurely in the UK every year. One in thirteen babies are born prematurely. Ickle Pickles can be a full term babies (40 weeks) requiring treatment or surgery or more likely babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks). Babies born before 27 weeks are classed as extremely premature and it is often these tiniest babies who need the most help. Since 2009, the Ickle Pickles Children's Charity has been raising money for the intensive care equipment that treats these babies and helps to keep them alive. Starting at Corfe Castle then along the Purbeck Ridge down to Lulworth Cove and on past the iconic Durdle Moor with some steep ups & downs en route. An elevation of c.1,100m apparently. Definition of Vulnerability: sous-chef carefully pouring large container of warm sticky honey into jars and unable to defend himself without spreading stickiness everywhere. Too tempting for tickling! It’s been a week of charities. Supporting the hand-over of Treasurers for our local village hall. It’s not a crock of gold but we do hoard our income with great care. Meanwhile, another wildly over-staffed national charity still can’t share information well: late, poor literacy and barely comprehends its beneficiaries. It would be good if the feedback made some difference but decades of experience suggests not. Finally, another vestigial charity with huge ambitions but masses of risk as it needs to get to grips with creating and distributing a substance to the public with all the associated licencing and insurance complications. How’s that for just a few days? The good news is that middle age now continues until at least the mid-70s. Someone should be telling employers. #vulnerable #honey #stickymess #souschef #charities #villagehall #middleage #blind #disabilityawareness
