What if... 💡Every nursery, school and college was able to employ an educational psychologist and a child psychologist for a year💡 We are seeing growing numbers of children and young people who are emotionally dysregulated, in and out of school. ❓As the education system continues to become the catch all for societies challenges, would the accessibility of such trained professionals provide very focused support for not only the children and young people but the adults too❓ Being able to consult with such professionals when designing school buildings, culture, policies, behaviour protocols and other such features of school life I think would provide an essential lens to help develop schools into places where children can regulate, where they can have high self-esteem and where they can thrive. I appreciate that the cost of this would be high but I believe the cost of not helping children develop the skills to self-regulate will be even higher in years to come if we don't address this now. As a counselor I understand that building closeness with students is the most important thing, but there are some obstacles based on the policies of some schools in Indonesia that want counselors to also be involved in mild and severe disciplinary matters stemming from student delinquency, so it is not surprising that if this continues to be allowed, the stigma that counselors are School Police will continue even though counselors by all means try to build good relationships with students. For example, if there is a student who is proven to have committed an offense and deserves to be punished, then in the process of giving punishment to the student, the teacher is authorized to discipline while a counselor meets with the student to discuss purely about his behavior, what and why it happened and the reasons behind it all.
