ABSTRACT: Dominant narratives of women’s suffrage have been shaped in ways that marginalize Pacific women’s experiences. Such narratives have emphasized the struggles of Global North women to achieve individualized political empowerment, primarily through the right to vote, from the late 19th century. By measures of struggle, individual empowerment and temporality, Pacific women have been characterized as passive recipients of the vote in the late 20th century. In this article, we contest these narratives through foregrounding Pacific women’s political contributions, and reconsidering how suffrage is defined in Global South contexts. By revisiting the Pacific women’s suffrage story and highlighting activism that mirrors and extends the strategies adopted by suffragists around the world to claim political voice, we put forward a more comprehensive picture of women’s franchise in the Pacific. I wanted to share a resource that has been incredibly impactful for me. GAGE: The Global Directory of Women Scientists. This search platform has connected me with brilliant women in my field and created opportunities for prospective students to find me, which was amazing as an early-career, underrepresented voice in my field. GAGE is part of 500 Women Scientists, an organization that makes science accessible. Their mission is to elevate women and gender-diverse individuals in STEM by amplifying our voices and expertise to those searching to hear it. This fosters collaboration across disciplines and removes barriers for those seeking mentors, collaborators, or simply role models in STEM. For me, it’s been a way to connect with like-minded scientists, share my journey, and expand the reach of my work in ways I didn’t anticipate. 🌟Fellowship Alert!🌟 📢Equality Now, The OpEd Project, and Senior Advisor Ann MacDougall are delighted to announce the launch of the 2024 US Public Voices Fellowship on Advancing the Rights of Women and Girls. This fellowship, now in its third year, is part of The OpEd Project’s Public Voices initiative to change who writes history and Equality Now’s mission to create a just world for all women and girls. As we stand at a critical juncture for #WomensRights and #GirlsRights, there is an urgent need to platform diverse female voices in the media, championing them as experts with strong perspectives that can break down barriers holding women and girls back. To help advance this aim, we are assembling a cohort of 20 diverse thought leaders from across the #USA. We want to hear from inspiring individuals with innovative ideas and engaging insights about strengthening the rights of women and girls in a range of areas. 📝 What you need to know: ➡ The fellowship entails 9 months of dedicated coaching and a further 3 months of follow-on support. ➡ Participation is free of charge to fellows. ➡ There are 3x virtual workshops and 1x face-to-face workshop in NYC. ➡ Full attendance in all 4 workshops is compulsory. ➡ A limited number of travel and lodging stipends are available for those who need assistance attending the in-person convening in NYC. ➡ Production of at least 2 articles is required, and we hope lots more. ➡ Access to weekly journalist office hours and regular expert talks with media leaders. Shedding Light on Latinx Women's Journeys in Postgrad Programs!👩🎓 Last week, my research team, Ebony Rubio , Andrea Alba and I had the privilege of presenting our qualitative study for USC's PASA Master's Research Symposium. We explored the multifaceted experiences, obstacles, and factors shaping the academic trajectories of Latinx women in postgraduate programs.🔍 Through in-depth interviews, we uncovered powerful themes around pre-planning influences, sense of belonging, resource constraints, and guilt stemming from cultural expectations. Our findings highlight the resilience and determination of Latinx women as they navigate institutional barriers and personal sacrifices in pursuit of higher education.💪 Centering their voices is crucial to understanding the unique challenges faced by this underrepresented group and informing efforts to create more equitable and supportive environments within academia.🏫 We're grateful for the opportunity to amplify these narratives and contribute to filling a critical gap in the literature. It never rains it pours... Three articles published in as many weeks. Hot off the press is Shadow of a doubt: a network analysis of mentoring as a screen industry equity intervention: https://lnkd.in/gJnCQm_f This article - written with Pete Jones and Aresh Dadlani describes a key finding from our three year project exploring gender equity challenges in the elite social networks of international film industries. We found a curious effect when we used data models to try and understand the effect of different gender equity policy interventions. "Shadowing" - in which a newer entrant to the industry is assigned to work with an already-established figure - seems to have a notable positive effect for women and gender minorities. On further exploration however we found that this improved access to the industry's social capital could be achieved simply by getting more women and gender minorities (WGM) a second opportunity to make movies (noting that more than 70% of industry participants are "one and done" - i.e. finished after a single project). This insight is important for EDI policies more generally: leveling structurally uneven network advantages can be achieved through the development of programs (including but not limited to shadowing) to ensure that WGM and other under-represented groups consolidate their professional collaborations quickly.
