Free job seeking advice for bioinformaticians! I have had a lot of people contact me regarding advice in their job hunt. As much as I like to help out as much as possible unfortunately I just don’t have the time to go back to everyone. So here’s a few pointers: 1) Apply to roles based on your domain background. Hiring managers are looking for people not only with the right tech skills but also with similar domain backgrounds as their team. So if your background has been in Neuroscience for the past 3 years then applying to companies in that sector will give you the best chance of success. 2) Apply to companies based locally to you or somewhere you are happy to relocate to (and mention this in your application)! Most companies are not open to remote roles currently. 3) To stand out, find the hiring manager or recruiter for the role on LinkedIn and send them a connection/message at the same time as you apply. I am combing through the 2023 Massachusetts Life Sciences Employment Outlook Report now and finding snippets that are relevant to a robust life science/compbio talent pipeline for biotech/pharma. "Data on post-graduation retention of life sciences graduates from MA public institutions show that while the state retains relatively high shares, there is still significant “leakage” of graduates moving out of state particularly at the master’s and doctoral levels. However, graduates who do remain in-state are being hired in non-life sciences industries. As a result of these factors constraining supply and a competitive labor market, employers cite retention of their incumbent workforce to be a major priority." A few comments: - Where are these graduates moving to? Somewhere with cheaper housing and less atrocious traffic, probably. The Research Triangle seems to be a popular destination. The high cost of living and commute time is pushing talent out of the area and these are issues that won't resolve anytime soon. - Even the state of Massachusetts recognizes that our life science talent are being poached by non-life science industries. But what is biotech/pharma doing about it? We can't wait around for people to be trained in academia and then decide whether they want to end up in biotech/pharma; many won't. An alternative model is to get people in the door right out of high school or college, train them, and retain them. 🌟 I'm thrilled to share that I was honored with the Best Presentation Award for my Applied Practice Experience at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, as part of my Master of Public Health degree culmination. This honor is particularly meaningful as it recognizes the effort and impact of my practicum project at the UC Health Employee Wellness Center. In my project, I conducted a deep dive into the factors that impact the emotional and physical wellbeing of Employee Wellness Counselors. Through diligent research and analysis, I examined the prevalence of compassion fatigue and burnout, subsequently formulating recommendations to bolster the overall wellbeing of the EAP Counselors. I also had the opportunity to implement strategies aimed at strengthening the resilience of the employee wellness program. This accomplishment embodies the collaborative effort and guidance from my mentor Lisa Melink, and the compassionate staff at the UC Health Employee Wellness Center. Their support was instrumental in translating my academic knowledge into practical strategies for real-world impact. 🌟 As a public health professional, with extensive regulatory knowledge to drive innovation and compliance in healthcare and clinical research with proficiency in Python, R-programming, I am seeking opportunities where I can contribute my expertise to improve healthcare outcomes. I am also experienced in biomolecular simulation tools such as Pymol and AutoDock and skillful in analyzing complex data sets for enhanced research accuracy. My regulatory expertise lies in meticulous management of EC & IRB Approvals, ICF & EDP reviews, effective collaboration with PI’s and SubI’s for site activation of the clinical sites, ensuring adherence to industry standards. 🤝 I am keen to connect with like-minded professionals and explore job opportunities where I can contribute to impactful projects. My journey further delved into the cutting-edge realm of gene editing through CRISPR/CAS9, complemented by hands-on experience in Goldengate, Gibson, and Gateway cloning methodologies during my tenure at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and the Laboratory of Genetics at WUR.
