To meet the ever-increasing demand for electricity, significant quantities of offshore wind parks have been installed, with all electricity transported via submarine power cable systems. However, failures of submarine power cables often result in substantial costs and downtime. To mitigate these challenges, DNV initiated the Joint Industry Project CAble Lifetime Monitoring (JIP CALM). 31 international offshore wind industry partners joined forces to enhance the reliability and performance of submarine power cables throughout their complete lifetime. We are excited to share with you the summary report of this innovative project. It offers valuable insights into various aspects, including the root causes of submarine power cable failures, the development of cable lifetime monitoring using distributed fibre optic sensing technologies, cable-seabed interaction, and an analysis of logistics and cost impacts. NEW REPORT: Our FOWCoE team have just released a new report on ‘Dynamic Cable Connection and Topology Comparison’. The floating offshore wind (FOW) industry is exploring innovative cable topology and connection designs that diverge from traditional fixed-bottom offshore wind systems. The FOWCoE project on ‘Cable Topology Comparison’ undertakes a high-level techno-economic study to evaluate the costs, risks and opportunities associated with different cable topologies and connection methods. The project included failure mode, effects, criticality analysis (FMECA), and reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) methods to compare cable ancillary technologies and topologies. In the realm of cable transit solutions, we find ourselves collaborating closely with the offshore wind power sector to promote decarbonization. Our role involves providing engineered, fire-proof transits designed to securely manage and seal large array and export cables on offshore substations. Recently, we made significant progress by performing advanced fire protection tests on our round Roxtec RS off-center seals in openable sleeve plates, specifically crafted for very large cables. NKT Partners with SSEN Transmission on Scottish power cable projects NKT has inked a framework agreement with SSEN Transmission to kickstart work on two Scottish HVDC interconnectors, solidifying their collaboration to bolster Scotland's renewable energy infrastructure. Darren Fennell, EVP & Head of HV Solutions Karlskrona at NKT, expressed satisfaction with the projects' progress and the continued partnership. "Our extensive experience in large turnkey HVDC projects positions us well to support the decarbonisation of Great Britain's power system." The projects include the Western Isles and Spittal-Peterhead offshore HVDC transmission links, crucial components of The Pathway to 2030 Holistic Network Design (HND). TDC Parsons Peebles has transformed a 46-year-old induction generator into a modern powerhouse. Originally designed in 1977 as an 11 kV, 7 MW induction generator for Foster Wheeler, the generator operated in conjunction with a power recovery train (PRT). This PRT system, consisting of a steam turbine, blower, and an expander, recovered some of the waste energy used to drive the generator. This PRT configuration continued until 1991, when a critical need arose to supply reactive power during grid outages. To address the system’s insufficient reactive capacity and mitigate the impact of grid outages, the solution required significant modification. The existing induction generator underwent a conversion process to enable synchronous operation. https://lnkd.in/eq7xZjPP
