Almost a decade ago, I was in a job interview in a "military town". We had just PCSed and my previous job was winding down so I was ready to start something new. After a nice conversation and a review of my resume and work history, one of the people interviewing me said, "You're great. But tell me, why would we want to hire you since you are a military spouse and will be leaving in a few years anyway?" In my head I thought "this has got to be a joke", but it wasn't so I answered the question and we moved on. This experience has certainly stuck with me over the years as something I never wanted to have happen again - to me or anyone else in my shoes. Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and my last one as an Active Duty spouse, so I wanted to bring to light some statistics about Military Spouses in the workforce and some challenges they face. 📊 The DoD's Survey of Active-Duty Spouses found that the unemployment rate among the civilian spouses of active-duty military members was 21% in 2021. This is nearly four times the overall unemployment rate of 5.3% that year. 📇 Active-duty spouses were the least likely to disclose their military affiliation in an interview; 23% of spouse respondents were "not at all likely" to disclose their affiliation according to a survey done by Blue Star Families. 💼 Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that the average tenure for an employee in the general workforce is 4.2 years. For the 25-34 age group, the median tenure is 2.8 years. The truth is, military spouse employment tenure is largely in-line with the general population. So recruiters, hiring managers and company leaders - this military spouse appreciation day - I urge you to take a risk on that military spouse in your hiring packet. You won't regret it! Ageism and not being able to find a new full-time job. At age 56, I am having hard time to get a new job thru LinkedIn. Actually I am quitting "this job". After replying to around 100 offers and getting less than 5 replies (even sending direct messages to recruiters) I am starting to think that LinkedIn's main goal (connecting people with jobs) is for under-40 people. Recruiters using automated tools for initial selections are LOSING BIG MONEY and opportunities.
