Founder of Blue Collar Open Book // Attracting the next generation to the Blue Collar Trades // Blue Collar Advocate
“I accidentally found my dream job.” This was said to me today by a former educator that is now in our industry. He went on to express how after he retired from his educator role of 30+ years, he poked around and applied for a laborer position at a paving company, and it changed everything. Yes, you read that right. At this stage in his life, he actively looked for another job... IN CONSTRUCTION...AS A LABORER! A physically demanding job. I’ll be introducing you to my new friend, Jim, very soon as we are working together on a couple things. I left with this smile on my face. This was my first in person meeting for Blue Collar Open Book and I was in my new company gear. I couldn't have asked for it to go better. For now, I wanted to get your thoughts regarding a new pool of potential employees. What about the group of early retirees (those in law enforcement, teachers, etc.) that now have time they don’t know what to do with? Maybe they feel financially stable and are willing to try a new industry… Would they potentially be more dependable employees at this stage in their life? How would you feel hiring somebody knowing they only have 5 or 10 years left in them? Would you count them out? Let me know! #workforcedevelopment #dirtworld #buildyourpath #bluecollaropenbook

Should I Accept a City Job Offer or Wait for $32K Severance? Answers: https://lnkd.in/g8sPsytP #JobDecisions #CareerChoices #SeveranceVsJobOffer Hey there, everyone! I could really use your insights on a tough decision I'm facing. 🤔 Let me break it down for you: Background: I've been grinding away at a sawmill in northern BC for the past decade. Recently, we got the news that our mill will close by the end of the year, and we're in for a severance package of about $32k—yup, that's 2 weeks of pay for each year of service. Right now, we’re all just waiting for the final closure date, which has everyone feeling stuck. 😩 Current Situation: So here’s where it gets interesting! I was offered a laborer position with the City, which pays $36/hour. Currently, I make $40/hour at the sawmill. The catch? I’d need to start in two weeks, which means waving goodbye to my severance. Now, my experience is mostly tied to operating sawmill machinery, and transitioning to a different industry isn’t exactly easy—especially since I see most entry-level jobs starting around $25/hour. On one hand, this City job sounds like a golden opportunity considering my skills and current market...

Balance The Great Lakes Roofing employee experience is one of balance. Hard work : Down time Sense of urgency : Patience Lots of ratios are kept in balance from day-to-day and season-to-season. Another enjoyable balance is consistency and predictability on jobsites. For instance, if you work the crane, then you'll likely be working the crane at this jobsite and the next jobsite too. But, also, if you work the crane, you'll get to visit a different jobsite for a different task every day. Consistency : Flexibility When you're on the Material Handling Crew, you may be a driver and you may be the rooftop picker. You may help rig loads of materials onto the flatbeds and get to know all of our Foremen, serving customers across the Midwest. What's that saying...the only constant is change...And those who excel at adapting will be the Crew that rises above the rest. Here, you're a part of something Great! #values #4Pillars #balance #employeeexperience #commercialroofing #local #Midwest

Recently noted that LinkedIn asks me when I log on, are you hiring? It’s a yes or no question. So I answer no. The truth, as an Independent OSHA Outreach Trainer & MSHA Trainer every single one of our clients in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire is #hiring. That is they are struggling to hire…lack of applicants. If you’re looking for a job that pays you well, #search for #sandandgravel #quarry #readymixconcrete #construction #infrastructure #heavycivil #asphalt or #agriculture and there are #Opportunities for full time or part time workers, #parts #professionals, #drivers, #operators, #welders, #mechanics or #laborers…they’re all looking, every single client we serve is looking for #people. Hourly Wage and Salary ranges I’ve seen are very impressive. On our own #farm, starting wage is $20/ hour. Can’t find help. Most of our clients entry level positions are $29.50 and up depending licenses and certifications. Can’t find help. Washout percentage is high too….so invest 4 to 6 hours in paid safety training for a laborer position, you’ve explained everything in detail, mutually agreed upon terms, #newhire quits in less time then you trained. #Shoveling? So I humbly suggest that if we as a Country are unable to find our own citizen workers to fill the huge skilled labor/trade gaps we face then we seriously need to move Leadership to fast track programs or pathways to work authorization programs or processes with training programs too. We the People need and deserve solutions to problems not the empty rhetoric trying to divide us. Have a #safe day out there #people🙏🏻
