I found this article very intriguing - people named Karen changing their name in order to avoid discrimination. Name discrimination has been in play for a long time, but like I have said before, many things don't make a difference until it impacts you. What are your thoughts? Thanks Lynne Curry for this blog. https://lnkd.in/ezgVKtU7

We're living in a world where Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" feels less like fiction and more like a disturbing preview of potential reality. Women have had to adapt to this threatening environment: - Carrying keys as makeshift weapons - Over-communicating whereabouts and using location tracking - Staying vigilant in public spaces - Using the buddy system - Guarding drinks closely - Taking self-defense classes - Supporting and believing one another The political climate, exemplified by figures like Donald Trump, has emboldened those who would restrict women's rights and safety. We may see an increase in violence against women as such behavior becomes more socially acceptable. The solution? Vote as if our lives depend on it - because they do. This isn't about age; it's about fundamental rights. We won't surrender our freedoms without a fight. Join us or step aside. #womensrights

Until men consistently, powerfully, and determinedly call out the violence, sexism and misogyny of women by other men—be it their fathers, brothers, sons, friends, co-workers, or any male figures-- who are harming, objectifying, threatening, shaming, intimidating, groping, raping, harassing, and more, women of all ages and professions, are in danger. Inherent in the silence of the "good" men, is the acceptance of the violence, sexism, and misogyny of the "bad" men. NOTE: The author of this piece is Tom Meagher who's wife was raped and killed by a man. Below are a few key points from his article. * "According to an EU-wide study conducted in 2010, one person in five knows of someone who commits domestic violence in their circle of friends and family (Special Eurobarometer 344, Domestic Violence Against Women Report, September 2010)." * " I'd been socialised to believe that men who rape are jabbering madmen, who wear tracksuit bottoms with dress shoes and knee-high socks. The only thing more disturbing than that paradigm is the fact that most rapists are normal guys, guys we might work beside or socialise with, our neighbours or even members of our family." * "We cannot separate these cases from one another because doing so allows us to ignore the fact that all these crimes have exactly the same cause - violent men, and the silence of non-violent men. Watching everyone posting for justice on the recent rape-murder incident, what's disheartening to see is that the conversation is turning into a men vs. women debate. This is not the focus we need. Why does everything have to be men vs. women? People need to understand men and women are complementary, NOT contradictory. We both are required; we both are needed—needed by each other as well. This tragic incident, which should unite us in seeking justice, is instead being turned into a men vs. women debate. This is not just a failure of justice but a failure of humanity. We need to remember that empathy and action are required from all of us, regardless of gender. It could be any woman from your family—your mother, sister, daughter, wife, girlfriend—anyone. Will we still argue about men vs. women? Just because she/he isn't your family doesn't mean you will kill basic mannerism, humanity, chivalry, kindness, and behavior. This isn't about sides; it's about standing together against the true enemy: violence and injustice. Let's focus on the real issue—ensuring that such heinous acts are met with the justice they deserve and that we foster a society where respect and dignity are non-negotiable. #JusticeForAll #EndViolence #HumanityFirst #StandTogether #JusticeForVictims #EmpathyMatters #StopTheDebate #EqualityNotContradiction

We aim to empower women through providing accommodation, psycho-social support, employment, and training.
Violence thrives in silence, but when survivors finally find the courage to speak out, it's a critical moment that can not be met with skepticism and doubt. We need to adopt a culture of believing victims the first time. Otherwise, we will never break the cycle. It is widely known that GBV disproportionately affects women compared to men, yet when a woman discloses being a victim of abuse, it is often other women who tend to question her account. Our society has made it common to pit women against one another, a practice that has now deeply rooted itself in our culture. Whether it is due to internalized misogyny, societal pressures to maintain a "happy family" image, or even personal experiences with abuse, we cannot be so desensitized that we are unable to process another woman's story. We have to do better. By creating a space of belief and support, especially among each other as women, we can empower survivors to heal and break free from GBV. #webelieveyou #believesurvivors #EndGBV #FHSCare https://lnkd.in/ey9dR5Jy

When you want to read something with meaning, and power not steeped in tragic tales, shame, victimhood and pleas for forgiveness. In a country where the sector is dominated by male voices & opinions - it matters a lot to have a collection of women who don't accept the same tired persona about women who use drugs, what activism can be for us and deny the 'vulnerable' position that enables increased state intervention and belief by some they can take our choices to save us. https://lnkd.in/eYtWCbEj

I'm furious watching the news coverage of this. Furious for so many reasons. I don't care about how the perpetrator was with his friends and generally perceived by others 'normal......good guy' - clearly not!! This will not be the first relationship in which he has been abusive - people like this have form and are used to getting away with it. I also don't want to hear about token changes in crossbow purchasing laws - let's talk about the need for; * SERIAL PERPETRATOR REGISTER * TOUGHER SENTENCES FOR PERPETRATORS *INCREASING CONVICTION RATES FOR COERCIVE CONTROL *INVESTING IN EDUCATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN RECOGNISING RED FLAGS OF ABUSE AND PROMOTING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS DO BETTER!!!!!!!!
Three more women murdered by male violence. Another day, another news report on the murders of 3 women (aged 25, 28 and 61), and a journalist feels the need to print questions posed to complete strangers about the character of the suspect, stating he was popular in his community. Why do journalists put this in print and report on it? Focusing on the suspect’s “normalcy” or popularity does little to aid the investigation or bring comfort to the victims’ families. Instead, it softens the horrendous crime and you wonder why people are becoming more and more desensitised to these murders. We all should be HORRIFIED! These stupid questions to strangers at the expense of the victims’ dignity and their families, has to be stopped. This practice diverts attention away from the true horrors of the crime and the impact on the victims’ lives. It does not help in any shape or form, it just causes huge distress to the families to see this in print. Pointless.
