🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 Yesterday, on the 26th of September, the #F4ECLIM project had a successful and fruitful kick-off meeting at UC3M in Madrid. 🌍✈️ F4ECLIM is a #greendeal #SESAR3 exploratory research project that will address uncertainties tied to CO2, contrails, ozone, methane, and water vapor climate effects. F4ECLIM will improve current algorithmic climate change functions (aCCFs) by integrating diverse weather and seasonal patterns, broadening their geographical scope and incorporating various climate metrics. These advancements will feed into a climate service for the aviation community. Additionally, the project will explore aviation's potential to reduce its climate impact through the development of robust flight planning algorithms. These algorithms will identify eco-efficient aircraft trajectories, assessing the associated climate impact reduction and costs. I was very happy to join the meeting, as #SESAR3JU Programme Manager, to ensure a clear understanding of the overall framework and procedures. #ClimateChange #Aviation #Sustainability #Innovation

Günther Schullerer, Director Engineering MT Aerospace AG, gave exclusive insights into opportunities and related risks to transfer material & processes solutions from #space into #aviation in the field of #hydrogen propulsion today. In particular, the importance of the required long-term structural properties was emphasised, which must be fulfilled for applications in the non-space sector with significantly longer lifetimes. This point has to be considered critical and may lead to a different choice of materials in aviation. It was an exciting panel discussion with esteemed colleagues and specialists Jessrang Mathias Matthias Miermeister Barnaby Law Ulrike van den Brande at ILA future lab stage. Now we are curious to see what the next #ILA24 day has in store for us. #electricpropulsion #rocketscience #sustainability

I'm happy to announce that my research paper, "Combined Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes/Large-Eddy Simulations for an Aircraft Wake until Dissipation Regime" has been published in Aerospace Science and Technology! 🌍✈️ In this study, we developed a new numerical strategy to better understand the impact of an aircraft near-field wake on the evolution of condensation trails (contrails). Our results highlight the significant role that horizontal tailplane vortices play in aircraft late wake evolution, especially in the so-called secondary wake. This research is important for the aviation industry as the warming effect of contrails is allegedly approximately two times more important than CO2 emissions, with an important uncertainty for contrail radiative forcing. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr. Nicolas Bonne, and my thesis director, Prof. Laurent Jacquin. Their expertise and knowledge were instrumental in bringing this study to fruition. I also thank DGAC for funding this research. For those interested, I invite you to check out the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eQ5jRV3f #Research #ClimateChange #CFD #Contrails #Aviation #Simulation #AtmosphericScience #Sustainability

#NREL research is preparing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for widespread takeoff. Our scientists are leading the way by evaluating a range of fuels to determine just the right chemistry in fuel design and production that will provide cleaner power for planes. Custom #NRELMobility instruments simulate high-altitude temperatures (down to -40°C) and pressures (up to 100 bar) to measure #SAF density, viscosity, and surface tension in these harsh conditions. These critical properties impact the fuel’s emissions and influence the safety, performance, and efficiency of a jet turbine engine. ZeroAvia : Liquid Hydrogen (#LH2) — where is the fuel of the future today? Speakers: Moderator - Anne DiPaola Editor, Cold Facts Dr Jacob Leachman - Washington State University Jack Maynard - Chief Hydrogen Engineer, ZeroAvia Jerome Lacapere - Managing Director, Absolut Hydrogen Angela Krenn - Thermal Principal Engineer, NASA Hydrogen’s benefits in terms of a lightweight, energy dense fuel are balanced by the relatively poor volumetric energy density when compared with kerosene. Liquid hydrogen is critical in narrowing that delta, but is so far unproven in flight. With many companies planning market entry of 40+ seat hydrogen powered aircraft this decade, advances in liquid hydrogen refueling and storage technology are critical. This session will explore the current technology readiness of LH2 systems and provide an overview of some of the most exciting R&D projects in this space. #sustainableaviation #BHAM2024 #Hydrogen
