The Extended Care Health Option (ECHO) program is one of TRICARE's best kept secrets. Who may qualify 1)The dependent must be TRICARE-eligible with a qualifying disability or condition. 2)The service member must be active-duty or activated National Guard/Reserve 3)Other groups may also be eligible. The MAA team is advocating to uncouple the EFMP enrollment mandate to the ECHO enrollment in order to remove this extra step and streamline access to ECHO benefits. Recently, over 300 industry partners joined us to connect, collaborate, and learn about our innovation needs at the Tactical Networks Program Office (PMW 160) Industry Day. What am I missing here? I feel as though I’m the only one having this conversation. Anyone who’s known me in service has heard me expressed this. It’s been in my mind since 2011, when I first started doing the math and realized how limited my future options were. Today, that question that crosses my mind is whether we are limiting our retention by forcing enlisted out of service at too young an age. By limiting advancement and flexible employment options later in their careers, the military is losing many of its most knowledgeable and capable operational leaders. There are very few programs designed to retain, employ, and entice the excited service of members in their late thirties to mid-fourties - an age where many are at their physical and mental prime. Many do stick around to current service limitations but they only represent a small portion of the enlisted force potential. That is because those who exit services as soon as they are eligible are generally finding options to work and find success elsewhere instead of within the service. How much more will this be a problem when the high three retirement population ages out? If you talk about it in terms of one person or situation at a time, the problem seems myopic. I look at the whole and see an ecosystem that could entice junior enlisted and senior enlisted to stick around by offering opportunities that look appealing to everyone.
