The Battle for Hasdeo Arand: Coal Mining vs. Conservation ‘#SaveHasdeoForest’ echoes across social media, yet many remain unaware of the battle brewing in Chhattisgarh. The forests of Hasdeo are called the lungs of India’s Chhattisgarh state. They provide a home to rich biodiversity, large tribal population and are a major migratory corridor for elephants. The human inhabitants, about 10,000 people from the Gond, Lohar, Oraon and other indigenous communities depend on these forests for their survival. But all of this is being sacrificed for a coal mining project. At a time when we often hear that we must urgently transition from fossil fuels to renewables, the coal hotspot of India reminds us that the reality is very different. Destroying a resource-rich forest for a mining project and displacing our own people, is this the definition of "development"? India: Forest Advisory Committee approves coal mine expansion in Chhattisgarh Chhattisgarh's Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has granted "in-principle" approval for significant mining expansions in the state. This includes additional diversion of 94.293 hectares for the Gevra mine expansion, 43.942 hectares for the Kusmunda mine expansion, and 0.093 hectares for SECL's Dipka Opencast coal mine. FAC emphasized the importance of treating catchment areas and urged SECL to comply with water resource conservation rules for the Hasdeo river. These measures align with sustainable mining practices and environmental preservation. The expansion plans aim to boost SECL's Gevra mine production from 52.5 million tonnes per annum to 70 million tonnes per annum. India's green ambition and those bearing the cost of it Rich in critical minerals such as nickel and chromium used in electric vehicles, land in Kundo in North Gujarat was auctioned earlier this year for exploration by private mining companies. Not only were the tribal residents not consulted before the auctions—in contravention of the provisions of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA), 1996—their pending land-rights claims under the Scheduled Tribes And Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act or FRA, 2006 over the mining site are also being ignored. This auction for exploration of critical minerals, essential for clean-energy solutions, highlights the increasing clash between India’s green ambitions and those who bear the cost of this transition. The #Indian #Gondwana #coal deposits are primarily found in the eastern and central parts of India, dating back to the Permian and Triassic periods. They are spread across several states in central and eastern India, primarily in the Damodar Valley Basin (Jharkhand and West Bengal), Mahanadi Basin (Odisha), Son-Mahanadi Basin (Chhattisgarh), Godavari Valley Basin (Telangana and Maharashtra), and Wardha Valley Basin (Maharashtra). These coal deposits are stratigraphically classified into several formations, including the Talchir, Barakar, Raniganj, and Kamthi formations. The coal-bearing strata are typically interbedded with sandstones, shales, and conglomerates, representing fluvial and lacustrine environments. Rainbow Rare Earths Ltd (LSE:RBW, OTC:RBWRF) has upgraded the resource at Phalaborwa by 15% adding two years to the project life. Total measured, indicated and inferred resources now stand at 35 million tonnes at 0.44% TREO [rare earths], with a near doubling in the material now classified as measured. Light rare earth elements neodymium (Nd) and praseodymium ("Pd") represent 29% and the heavy REEs dysprosium (Dy) and terbium (Tb) represent 1% and 0.3% respectively. Nestled near the #Saindak #Copper & #Gold #mine, the #Pachinko and #ChigenDiq #Ironore mines, the colossal untapped #RekoDiq Copper & Gold project, and countless smaller mines of #Pumice, #Sulphur, #IronOre, and the famed #Chagai #Onyx, Nokkundi still grapples with the absence of basic necessities. Proper #schools and quality #education remain elusive, clean drinking #water is scarce, #healthcare facilities are inadequate, and #vocational #training #opportunities are nonexistent. This lack of #infrastructure and #resources traps the #indigenous #youth in a cycle of #poverty, hindering their ability to secure decent #jobs in the very industries that extract these riches from their land. The stark contrast between the vast mineral wealth surrounding Nokkundi and the town's persistent struggles highlights a critical question: how can #communities living amidst such abundance remain so #deprived? Investing in education, healthcare, and vocational training is not just a moral imperative, it's also a strategic investment in the future of these communities and the long-term success of the mining industry itself. Inspected #Narayankuri mines of ECL today which is part of #MahavirColliery. This mine is unique for two reasons. First, it deploys #HighWallMiner to extract coal from underground pillars. Second, the famous rescue of 1989 took place here which was later on filmed as #MissionRaniganj.

In November 2022, #Jharkhand took the lead as the inaugural Indian state to embrace the notion of a "just transition," transitioning from reliance on #fossilfuels to #renewableenergy and creating #sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.    Nevertheless, conflicting legislation, approvals for new mining projects, #coal companies' inadequate efforts in scientifically closing #mines, and the absence of policies for the utilisation of reclaimed land are hindering the state's journey towards a "just transition."
