How might highly engaging, projected spatial experiences, like holograms, improve empathy for others? It appears the "hologram zoo" in Brisbane is at the forefront of exploring this opportunity, especially as relates to humans' relationship with animals! 🎊 One of the problems I see with zoos is a lack of rich information to learn about the actual animals. (A plaque doesn’t do much for me.) Most animals I see in the zoo are not living a life that tells me much about them. I see a small snapshot in time and have little context about where they came from or the range of their development and behaviors. In a sense, this "single snapshot" is an information-poor stereotype of the animal. In many cases, these animals have become “token animals”. But there is an alternative: good storytelling and rich information with a focus on empathy. Nature shows like Planet Earth are popular for just this reason - they show the animal in the wild, with rich scenes that tell an empathy-driven story. What if you could experience that same richness of media as Planet Earth, but in person, immersed in a 3D world, at the zoo? The opportunities are obvious, and this would undoubtedly attract more visitors to a zoo. I myself am not that into VR. It makes me dizzy and feels too disconnecting from others to be standing beside each other yet totally apart. I do hope, however, to experience something like the "Hologram Zoo" soon. Here's to using technology wisely and to developing more empathy for others - whatever species they are. 🐬 😊 🌿
