"Too often Aboriginal people are silenced, and our solutions aren’t heard. In the Northern Territory, punishments are the preferred solution by the system – with investment in policing and controls, but not in prevention. The punitive Western model of locking children up is an act of violence and denies responsibility for the basic principles of care and protection. Why are governments not investing in Aboriginal-led solutions? Especially when we have the upstream models of prevention, that give agency, ownership and control of decisions back to the people. As First Nations people we have shown that we can create solutions that work. Children’s Ground is where I put my efforts. Children’s Ground is the vehicle Aboriginal people are driving to make decisions in their lives." Read Children's Ground founding chair William Tilmouth's piece in Arts Hub on the referendum results, the In My Blood It Runs book, and the ongoing fight for First Nations self-determination: https://lnkd.in/dckKCbdc

Last week, we witnessed distressing scenes from far-right riots in Dublin. Sadly, not unexpected as independent organisations have long monitored and documented the rise of misinformation and far-right movements in Ireland. Our colleagues at Hope and Courage produced an analysis on how the disturbing events of November 24th unfolded. It sheds light on the failures in policing, the role of social media in amplifying hate, and the urgent need for systemic change. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBCeY8Sh On 20th Nov ISD (Institute for Strategic Dialogue) published a report by Ciaran O'Connor, Aoife Gallagher and Francesca Visser on their research on extremism and disinformation in Ireland, a timely piece of work that helps illustrate the broader context of the unsettling events in Dublin. 👉 https://lnkd.in/deG96abR We believe our collective responsibility is clear. Both the analysis by Hope and Courage and the research from ISD highlight the urgency for systemic change. It’s essential to prioritise awareness and work together towards a more inclusive future.

This report highlights major cracks in most of our provisions, many of which we already see and deal with daily. The government wants our young people to stay in education, as do we as educators, but if they are young carers who live in poverty and struggle with poor mental health, with inadequate services in place, then how is that an option?? Proposals are great but they are just that; a few scribbled lines boasting false promises.
Today, the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee published an important report outlining proposals for making the most of community sentences. It includes evidence given by our director, Phil Bowen, and trustee, Courtney Bryan. Read it in full here: https://ow.ly/a0Zp50Qmnbc.

Australia is on the cusp of introducing an Anti-Slavery Commissioner! We extend our sincere gratitude to Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, KC, MP and the Australian Government for their steadfast commitment to crafting the bill that introduces the role of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner in Australia. We also acknowledge that the Coalition Government instigated Australia’s Modern Slavery Act. The Greens, Teals and many independents are very supportive. Modern slavery is an egregious violation of human rights and should transcend party politics. The introduction of an Anti-Slavery Commissioner signifies a major advancement in Australia’s ongoing efforts to combat this abhorrent crime. However, we believe the Anti-Slavery Commissioner's role needs to be strengthened. We need your help to make sure that the Commissioner has the necessary resources, independence and scope to be impactful in eliminating modern slavery. Please use the template to send an email asking your MP and Senators to support strengthening the role of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner, so that they're fully equipped to prevent and address modern slavery. https://lnkd.in/gQt4ZKsn
