Yesterday, I was invited to meet the new Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt Hon John Healey MP, alongside a select group of UK Small Businesses (SME) and mid-tier companies (with over 250 staff). I found him both warm and engaging, and I was encouraged by his focus on where the department can build on progress and where they need to accelerate change. My main takeaways were that the MOD and industry need to do more, and do it faster. Also, the relationship between MOD and industry needs to improve, this was particularly relevant to SMEs. The discussion resonated with my own opinions, encapsulated in my recent paper “Soldier as a Sensor”. I delivered this recently at the Close Combat Symposium and it can be read here: https://lnkd.in/edJW7RgC. It summarises how I am an advocate for a defence approach that is data-driven, user-centric and digitally enabled, and I presented a path forward. One area where 2iC are driving the essential change is delivering digital solutions at pace and scale to the UK’s Land Special Operations Forces (Land SOF) over the next two years.
